iDrift wheel accessory promises smoother turns for gamers

While the launch of the iPad may still be a few months away, that hasn’t stopped designer Michael Greenberg from looking to capitalize on the hype and spotlight currently surrounding the iPad and it’s future in gaming.

Enter the iDrift, an accessory that morphs the iPad into a giant steering wheel. The iPads accelerometers will still be doing all the real work.

The iDrift comes in two circular plastic halves that clip onto the front and back of the device, giving you a touchscreen steering wheel to add a more realistic edge to your favorite driving game.

Depending on the price ( it has no mechanical or electronic parts whatsoever, making it cheap to manufacture and durable), this may be a great add-on for serious gamers and might add some extra drop insurance for those who tend to drop things often.

My only question is how the iDrfit affects your ability to easily press the virtual buttons like the gas and brakes? appVersity.com will try to find the answer and give you a complete run-down of the iDrift and other accessories on the run up to the iPads launch.

For ages now I’ve seen the occassional report of similar devices for the iPhone and iPod touch. But as yet nothing has actually made it to market. It will be interesting to see if this concept makes it to market. And good point about how you would use the onscreen buttons (brake accelerate etc).
