Match 3D Flick Puzzle Review

editors-choiceI’ve said it before, but it doesn’t matter how full a genre is if you can come up with something that people haven’t seen… and something they want. It’s like being at a party and it’s full of girls, but as soon as “the right girl” comes in you can’t remember how many others there were to begin with. Okay that sounded really sexist so just use the analogy with whatever you want to put in there.

m31That being said, one of the most populated genres in the App Store is the Match 3 field. In fact, I’ve always wondered when someone will make a Match 3 game where you have to match 3 Match 3 games and they’ll disappear from the store. It’s like Survivor meets Bejeweled.

Sure, that’s a bit of a joke, but I always thought it’d make a cool game. But then PlayScreen came up with something better… And something I haven’t seen before, and something I really wanted.

So what is this amazing new idea that pushes this game to the top of the class? Well, the title (as weird as the game title might be) should give you at least some hint.

It’s in 3D. And I’m not just talking about throwing in a few 3D effects, I’m talking about building a cube of 512 different blocks that you’ll have to match up. That’s right… I said 512 blocks! And it could work out that at some point you’ll be matching blocks that at one time were hundreds of blocks apart at the beginning of the game.

Intrigued yet? If not you’re just not a fan of Match 3 games. Everyone else has probably already stopped reading and has moved on to buy the game. Or at least gone on to the free Lite version.

Now that I’ve given that last piece of advice, I’m not sure why I’m even writing anything else. You can go and play the game and you’ll see everything. But I’ll still go on and give a few impressions.

First off the game play is very simple. Sure a game like this is really just about swapping tiles, but you’re forgetting that you’re working with a big cube here. Now knowing that the controls are simple should really mean a lot.

You can control the cube in all the ways you’d want. You can spin it to show any side you want to look for matches. That not enough for you? Dig deeper into the cube and look at the various planes one by one. And remember, we’re talking about a cube so that plane could be from any of the sides. That alone should show you just how cool this game is.

And the play is also fun. Sure the fact that it’s a big 3D cube should be more than enough to keep you interested, but they’ve also added a bunch of special blocks that will let you do things like cause explosions, wild cards, and other things you’ll need in order to defeat the cube.

PlayScreen also added plenty of modes to keep things interesting. Standard will just keep adding blocks once you get rid of them and you’re just going for scores. It’s fun but with a game like this I really push the Survival Mode. Here you are just trying to clear away as much of the cube as you can. There is a lot of fun to seeing that big block being knocked down little by little. It’s truly the game to play… and play… and play.

m32There are Timed, Untimed, Locked, and Unlocked versions of these games and the whole package is really great.

About the only things I’d say that would make the game better is an online board so that you can have something to shoot at. I know it’s not much to complain about, but it’s all I could really come up with. Oh, I’ve always thought the name was weak (why “flick”?), but that’s also nitpicky.

I was lucky enough to get to be in on some of the Beta Testing for this game and I’ve had a blast with it for over a month now. I’m glad that you now get the chance to check it out.

If you like Match 3 games you’ve got to check this out. It’s not only twice as good as the others out there… It’s 8 times better. I take that back… I was just using pure math for the joke. When you’re moving the cube around trying to find your matches you’ll see that it’s a lot more than just 8 times better.

Pick it up… and just try to put it down.
