Warfare Incorporated Review

A full blown real time strategy game in the palm of your hands? That’s what developer Spiffcode is claiming with the release of Warfare Incorporated. Growing up a huge fan of the genre, I found it hard to image that a feature complete RTS game could be done on a mobile device. With a few other RTS games currently out on the market how could this title separate itself from the competition? I can safely say, without any doubt after, spending some quality time with the game that we finally have a winner!

Like I mentioned before I’ve always been a huge fan of the RTS genre. Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, Empire Earth and countless others over time. So it should come as no surprise that I went into this review a little skeptical, and with good reason. Having bought and played a few other RTS games on the AppStore and feeling pretty lousy about those experiences, I wasn’t expecting much. Thank goodness I’ve been proven wrong.

warfare1Warfare Incorporated is a story about a newly discovered planet called Icarus with its astounding mineral wealth and mysterious alien artifacts. You find yourself thrust into a commanding role for the ACME corporation and are asked to build your forces in an attempt to defend and control the planet against the opposing OMNI corporation as you unlock the mystery of the artifacts.

Each mission starts out with briefing from HQ and a few select vehicles or personnel on a remote spot on the map. Movement could not be easier. Simply tap a unit you would like to move and the personnel will report they are ready for movement. simply touch anywhere on the screen to move that unit into position.

Selecting multiple units of the same type can easy be achieved by simply double touching the unit type of choice and any of that type of personnel on your current screen will be selected. Simply click where to move them and they will acknowledge your command.

Selecting multiple units for movement is just as easy and makes great use of the iPhone’s pinch feature. Simply place your index finger above and to the left of the upper most unit you would like to select and while still maintaining your finger on the screen use your thumb to place a box around the units you want to select. Than simply click on the location you wish to move your troops to. Take note that by using this EVERY vehicle will be moved including your BULLPUP which collects your resources. So take heed to move them back to their collecting jobs.

You start out by establishing a base and building a power generator, and a Processor which will collect the material from around the map. Without money you’re dead in the water, and trust me, your going to need plenty of it to complete your missions.

By pressing on each building you will be presented with the option to build, repair or sell the structure or additional personnel. Certain items will not be available for purchase until other building are constructed.

warfare2Once your base has been established you can start building your forces. One Strategy used on me countless times before in previous games was to simply amass a single army of 100 and march right in. Thankfully you won’t have the money, nor the time, for that to happen in the single player missions. The enemy forces don’t just sit back and wait for you to attack. They are prodding around the map themselves looking for resources and trying to establish a foot hold on the planet as well.

For the most part the enemy A.I. is pretty competitive, sending small groups of combined infantry and vehicles to probe your positions from the start.

The one complaint I have is that once an enemy has locked on to a target lets say for instance a building and starts to attack it. You can simply walk a man up to them and shoot them without fear of them turning there attack on you until whatever they are locked onto is destroyed. I’m hoping this will be addressed in future upgrades, and while it doesn’t happen a lot it is a potential way for you to cheat some.

There is a mini map located on the bottom right of the screen that will allow you to quickly jump around the map, and while its functional I can’t help but think by adding the ability to double tap it and make it jump back to your base or auto focus on units under attack would have been a nice addition to an already solid control scheme.

The game also does a good job of hand holding you through the early missions making sure you stay on task and understand the objectives.

With the ability to save your game, adjust the gameplay speeds, as well as adjusting the difficulty level i’m not sure there is more one could ask from the game.

Graphically Warfare Incorporated is a mixed bag, while the environments are static and decently detailed, I found the vehicles and personnel tend to look very similar and can get confusing in large battles.

This is a temporary video please be patient as I get a real video ready

Positives:

  1. Large selection of vehicles and structure types to build 22 in total.
  2. Compelling Story Line
  3. Ability to download over 200 additional maps for free
  4. A Full mission editor – that allows you to create and publish your own missions downloadable via their website
  5. The future promise of 2-4 Online Multi-player matches!
  6. Frame rate hold up even with multiple enemies on the screen

Negatives:

  1. Vehicle and Personnel can get confusing when trying to select one particular unit type in large battles.
  2. Enemy AI does not seem to pay attention to troops in the area while attacking a target.

its pretty safe to say Warfare Incorporated will be residing on your iPhone for quite some time.

All in all these completes are equivalent to nick picking, and do not deter from the fun of the game, and what more could you ask for? compelling storyline, great controls, good graphics and countless hours of single and upcoming multi-player gameplay all rolled up into a portable package for a fair price!

You would easily pay $20.00-$40.00 for a game of this quality on any other competing devices, so I can safely say that if your a long time fan or the genre or a first time recruit there simply isn’t any other RTS game on the AppStore that is worth your time or money more than this one..

Spiffcode has done exactly what they promised. A Full-out Real Time Strategy game in the Palm of your Hand!

Thank you, and don’t forget to thank your daughter too, hehe!
The game is great. I should have bought this game sooner. It really surpasses what I had in my mind about an RTS game for the iphone. I can’t wait for a C&C, hopefully EA is working on it as I type this. :)

Eldaz2 Welcome to the blog, hang in there we can only grow and you guys are the founding members :) As for the frame rate it is excellent. I would get it before the price goes up once the multiplayer and new additions are added in!

I’m not a huge RTS follower, but I have played my share of RTS (Command & Conquer and Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle-Earth).

I don’t know why, but I was skeptical in buying a RTS for the iPhone since these games normally have a lot going on that I
would get lost playing it. But after reading this review, I want to play it,
    and future RTS ones.

Thanks for the detailed and precise review. Looking forward to more reviews from you.

Nothing like a good RTS for the iPhone….this is something to add to anyone’s short list.

  7. Glenn says:

Yes both :) I have them but right now is a horrible time to launch a site :) right around the holidays. I have a few shorter reviews in the pipes prior to those so keep checking back for those.
