Air Sharing

by George on 01/19/2009

iPod owners have long grown accustomed to their gadgets ability to act as a storage device. With the release of the iPhone and the iPod Touch Apple chose to omit access to the extra space though. Thankfully we have 3rd party developers who are stepping to the plate.

Air Sharing is an essential iPhone app that enables your iPhone or iTouch device to become a wireless portable hard drive.

Under the settings tab you can setup the ability to enable or disable public access, setup password, show file extensions, as well as viewing options and a slide show setting.

One strong point of the application is the detailed setup instructions provided that will have any OS user up and running in moments. The applications works flawlessly on OS X, Windows, and Linux based computers.

Once connected the drive will appear as a network shared drive and moving files from either side of the connection is as simple as drag and drop.

Air Sharing has it’s own built in web-browser as well. You can simply connect to the device as if it was a web page.

The application understands a large number of native file formats out of the box. Web content, video and audio (only supports current iphone video formats), images and text files as well as Office, and iWork applications. These documents can be viewed in either portrait or landscape mode.

Files can even be put in separate folders to organize your data better as pictured on the left.

Users will need to make sure they have extra space available to utilize the application to it’s potential, as the iDevices just simply don’t compare to the storage capacity of  the iPods.

If you are on a wi-fi network with regularity and do not have a flash drive already this app really is a no brainer, you really should just have it. It’s secure, quick, and reliable what more could you ask of an app?

I am on the fence about this one. I have the free app Evernote and can put my files on my iphone using that. Looks interesting though and I’m keeping my eye on it for a price drop!

This app has interested me a lot. Currently using a free similar app, but it’s limited to 300 mb of files. I just can’t see myself paying the current price for this app.

I am currently using Files Lite as I missed the free period on this app. Air Sharing is definitely at the top of my most wanted list (and one I wouldn’t mind winning :) ).
