IRec – Voice recorder

Voice recorders can come in handy in many situations, like recording a quick task you need to do on the way home, classes where you want to sleep, or just playing back funny moments to your friends. Being that the iDevice doesn’t have such a basic feature as a voice recorder, the application iRec was created.

The application is well designed and laid out, with buttons for quality settings, recording options and a button to your library directly on the mirec1ain screen.

The quality settings include good, better, and best, and a 5 second clip at best quality is about 700kb. The sound quality of playback was crystal clear when it was recorded in an empty room, but in a fairly crowded room, my voice was quite hard to hear. Once you have a sound clip recorded, you have options to play it back immediately, trash it right off the bat, or you can save it into your ‘library’. When you navigate to your library, you can add personal notes to your sound files, rename them, and add personal notes to them. You can also load them back up into the main program and add onto them with more recording.

While the sound library that your files are stored in isn’t tied into the library of your iDevice, you are able to upload the sound files to the authors server, and then email the link to that file to your friends (note that the files have to be less than 10mb). The other way of sharing files, is to enable the Local Web Sharing feature in the options, after which it provides you a link you can navigate to on any web browser on your LAN and browse and download files directly from the library of your iDevice.

A few features that I figured would have been standard, were lacking in this application. The ability to name your own sound files before you record them isn’t there, once you are done with the recording, you have to save it into your library you have to navigate to the file and rename it there. Another feature I would have really liked would be the option to sync your sound creations directly to your computer, seeing that currently the only ways to get your creations off your phone, is through Wi-Fi.

Having this seemingly bug less and virtually solid application, will definitely be a boon to your iDevice application stockpile.
