Abby Crabby Review
Back in the early days of mobile gaming the game play was pretty simple. You had one easy goal and the game just kept increasing the difficulty until you lost. Ah… the simple days.
And now, thanks to the App Store, the simple days have come back, only in color and with better controls, graphics, sound, and a laundry list of other things. It’s like “Back to the Future”, only with Megan Fox instead of Lea Thompson.
Abby Crabby is a great example of simple game play being “really good” game play. And is, oddly enough, how I envisioned my games looked like back n the day, but now I know they were nothing like this.
In Abby Crabby your job is to keep your baby crabbies safe from all the falling garbage that seems to be raining down to the ocean floor. If your crustacean offspring get hit with an object they die – I guess their shell wasn’t completely hardened.
You move your guardian mother crab (I’m guessing, Abby) back and forth by tilting your device back and forth. You can catch the falling debris in your claws or bounce them off of your head. The trash in your claws can then be tossed back up (with a swipe of your finger) and can knock out the oncoming trash.
And there lies the simplicity of the game. Just keep going back and forth keeping your children safe. If you run out of crab kids the game is over.
The game starts off pretty easy, which is perfect for younger players, but the game gets pretty hard after awhile. There are several different types of trash and each of them fall at different rates. Apparently, Isaac Newton never worked underwater… and apples float. But back to the game…
Graphically the game is very colorful and the animations are crisp. Again, we’re not talking a lot of depth (pun not intended) here, but they work exactly as you would want them to work. Kids will love the cartoon feel of it all.
The sound is also very good. Effects are clean and the soundtrack has a nice steel drum feel to it that actually didn’t make me want to listen to my own music while playing.
I like the way that Abby Crabby didn’t take the easy way out by just giving good game play. You’ll find some bonus items like beach balls, dynamite and stars to spice things up, and there are several achievements to unlock. I have to admit that I love it when a game throws in unlockables because it really ups the replay factor.
If the game has a draw back it’s that it can get repetitive. This is something pretty unavoidable with games like this, but it’s not a deal breaker. Like I mentioned, you have the different achievements as a reason to keep at it.
These games may not be for everyone. You don’t get caught up in a storyline and there is no customization or items to buy, but it does have a nice charm to it. Abby Crabby is a great pick up and play game that will work for all ages – and hidden in there somewhere is a nice message about keeping our oceans cleaner, and that can’t hurt.
The Good
Good Graphics and Sound
Challenging Retro-style Play
Achievements
The Bad
Can Be Repetitive

It looks like it somewhat more of a kids game.
nice game, the it looks like a fun classic game, but there doesn’t seem to be much replay value, there’s not much to do, but the achievements do help a little with that.
wow its looks so childish but i just want it know
Sounds like a great pick-up-and-play arcade game! Does it have any scoreboard, global or local?
Definitely looks like something my kids would love!
