Age Of Puzzle Review

Yes, there are several Match-3 games out there, but as we’ve seen with late comers like the very cool Match 3D Flick game that can make you forget about all the others.  It’s all about adding something new, and doing it well.

aop2Punch Studio presents “Age Of Puzzle” to the mix to see if they can make a dent in a very strong walled market.  The twist they add to it is to make the Match 3 format into a battle.

What?  You say you’ve seen this in games like Puzzle Quest, Samurai Battle, and even a little known Presidential election game?  Yep… it’s been done, but let’s see if they can make it work out and get something new.

There are a lot of similarities between Age Of Puzzle and the games I mentioned above.  You will take turns with the computer to try and match 3 or more icons.  The object is to use those matches to attack your enemy and defeat them.

Age Of Puzzle does a nice job with their presentation.  The screen is large and you can see everything very clearly.  Some of the other games try to hard to give you a lot of spells and other things and the result is that the screen is too small.  I have to give it up to AOP for making the playfield large enough to enjoy the game.

The icons are grouped into two categories.  You have the attacks and the defenses.  Again, a nice way to go in terms of making the game easier to play.  You have Melee, Range, and Magic attacks and the corresponding defenses to go along with them.

This makes strategy very fun in the game.  Once you fully charge up your defense in a category you cannot be hurt with the next attack in that area.  This makes you keep an eye on what your opponent is able to defend and plan your attacks accordingly.

Along the way you’ll acquire items that will make you stronger in your attacks and some points that you can use to beef up all areas of the game.  This adds a bit of an RPG element to the game, but in honest it doesn’t come into play the way you’d like… more on that later.

Control is easy in the game.  As I mentioned you have a large screen to work with and that helps with the choosing of your icons.  The music and other sound effects also make the game good to play.

aop3But there is a problem with what Punch Studios has offered with Age Of Puzzle.  It’s nice that they went for a little more of a “pick up and play” type game, but in doing so they’ve completely left out any sort of story.

You fight against enemies that you know nothing about and after fighting them they go away and that’s that.  I have to admit that I really liked playing the game, but I found myself missing the story of Puzzle Quest.

Another thing that will throw some people off is seeing characters that are slightly altered versions of characters from a well known PC game… I’ll let you dive into that one.

And while I’m on subject of art work, there is one thing that Age Of Puzzle needs to fix, one icon is dark blue and another is dark purple.  Those are way too close and you have to really take a second to make sure that you don’t mess them up.

If you’re a fan of Puzzle Quest you’ll find a quicker version of the game here.  It’s a fun way to spend a few minutes, but in the end it found me wanting a little more.  Still for a buck it’s a nice pick up if you’re a fan of the genre.

Positives: Nice Match-3 Game, Good Strategy Element, Easy To Play

Negatives: No Story, Which Is Odd For A “Battle Game”, Art Work “Borrowed”?, Colors Are Too Close

Nice comprehensive review. I’ve come to enjoy match 3 style games when I’m in the mood for some more easy going gameplay. This looks like one I’ll have to check out for myself. It’s got a few more elements but is not heavily bogged down in an intensive story line.

That’s why I love this page; I had never heard about this game whatsoever but considering that puzzle quest is one of my favs, I want it! Thanks for the review

ive only tried the puzzle quest demo and it was fun, but too expensive for me with all the great deals on the app store. This seems like a nice “lighter” version of the game for very cheap and i can see the appeal. Nice review.

I’m a huge fan of Puzzle Quest and I think this review pretty much nails it.
Pro’s are right on, Con’s are right on. Good stuff.
You’re absolutely right that for a buck, it’s not bad, but in the end, it still ain’t no Puzzle Quest! ;)

I am a big fan of Puzzle Quest really like that and its funny before you even mentioned it in the review I thought they looked similar. Stinks that this doesn’t have a story mode because that was kind of like the whole point of Puzzle Quest. But this still looks pretty good
