Alien Assault Review

I remember seeing an old movie where aliens come down in their little flying saucers and start killing everything in sight. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have that happen to me; aliens running amuck, my life in danger. Never have I thought about being the aliens. In alien assault however, I get to be the alien…and boy is it fun!

picture-66You start out the game with the choice of three difficulty levels. Pick your poison and off you go. You basically try to attack everything that is alive, plant or animal, in sight. The enemies are outlined in red and the rest in blue. Each earns you points but the blue targets give you fuel. Once you run out of fuel the level is over, so it’s important to kill as many blue targets as possible.

When fuel starts running low, you will have to navigate to the landing zone and wait there until you’re out of gas. If you don’t make it there in time, you will crash and have to start the level over again. After you land you move on to the next level. There are 35 levels in total. There are also no high scores which is odd since it keeps track of score during the game.

You control your ship by tilting your device. As you pass over different objects, they are automatically zapped. Some are required to be zapped multiple times for them to die. Occasionally, when moving my ship to the edge of the screen, it would cling to the edge. A good shake will set you free, but it becomes a nuisance rather quickly. The ship is also a little hard to maneuver, not going exactly where it should have.

picture-56The graphics are pretty run of the mill, everything being a cartoon. The obstacles you need to maneuver around are fairly good 2D graphics but the things you have to attack are very small most of the time. It’s easy to tell what they are based on where the level takes place though. This is no fault of the game, but of the lack of screen on your device.

Sound effects in this game are very good. The music is that kind of old school outer space music with a slightly more modern twist. It definitely sets a tone for the game, very retro but still current. When you attack, it has that typical laser sound as well as some noises from the things you’re attacking. Aside from the music, these sound affects are pretty generic.

This is a nice game to pass the time when you’re bored, but since it doesn’t have a high scores list, this wont be something the hardcoriest (is that a word? It is now) will be picking up.

The Good

Music is nice
Graphics are good

The Bad

No high scores = little replay value
Controls need some polish.

Cool idea, but it sounds like the end result didn’t turn out so good, what with the getting stuck at the edge of the map and controls not working so well. I’m sure the high scores will be added as an update though, since it does have a score system.

It might not have leader boards but I’m sure the developer can work on that because a game like this MUST have them. Besides that, this game looks really good.

THOUGHTS GRAPHICS ARE CRAZZZZZY!!! But I wonder if there is a huge load time or it crashes often. Most games with good graphics do :(

Why are so many games leaving high scores? This is the 3rd or fourth i’ve read where once again in the bad “no high score”

Looks fun but I am curious why they would leave out high scores.

Looks like a neat game. Reminiscent of Flock, which recently came out. (Different idea entirely, but looks similar when comparing imagery).

It’s not a bad game, and the tilt works well. You can also check out the lite version to get a better idea of the gameplay.
