CastCatcher

Thanks to the 2.x firmware many of us iDevice owners have seem to forgotten that one of the things our gadgets do best is play music.

img_00071Developers have not forgotten about how wonderful music can be on these devices though. Supplementing our standard iPod app we have 3rd party apps like AOL Radio, Pandora, and now CastCatcher. One might think that all these apps may be overload, but each deserves a spot.

CastCatcher essentially is about you. The app wants you to customize it to suit what you want to listen to and lets you do this in a couple different ways. The “killer feature” of this app is most definitely its ability to stream any shoutcast you can throw at it. Having all these shoutcasts would be for naught though if the UI was not as easy to navigate as it is.

img_0001On the main screen you see a list of all your stations. When one is selected you come to the screen pictured on the left. After a snappy buffer (on the 3G network) your selection starts right up. The sideways “wi-fi hurricane” serves as an indication of how far ahead your buffer is.

I did encounter a snafu during my testing though. When out and about I switched from 3G to EDGE and lost my connection and the app was not able to recover it. This seems to be pretty common though as I have seen this happen on many different apps. I also wish that the cast would keep playing when you return to the mainscreen.

Other than those minor gripes I have throughly enjoyed CastCatcher. It certainly has had me reaching for my earbuds a lot more than I have been recently.

      my itunes review:

“this app blows me away in a sense it is able to let me add my favourite shoutcast url and stream it away.
With this feature unlocked in my iphone, I am happily crooning my favourite tunes away!”

  2. akame says:

But this app has customisation of streams, which is a feature i waiting for.

  3. Daniel Deutsch says:

There are many other apps that do the same thing (for cheaper too).

        I used radiobox and fstream.

        Fstream is free.

RadioBox cost $2.99 which stream shoutcast.
very nice selection of streams too.

FlyCast also stream shoutcast and it is free.

This is what i have been waiting for! To be able to choose the shoutcast audio channel to listen to rather than be dictated on which channel i can listen to.

  5. akame says:

Able to customise which shoutcast channel to listen too? that is so cool and it is also what i have been waiting for.
