EDGE

Edge isn’t your average puzzle game in fact I wouldn’t call a puzzle because you’re never left wondering where to go, or how to progress throughout the game.  It would be better to describe it as a journey based platform game instead of a puzzle game.

Edge is a single player only game consisting of 25 levels of gameplay in which you guide a cube through an ever changing maze in a 3D environment while collecting as many prisms as possible before exiting the level. There is no time limit for each level or penalty for dying though you do receive a ranking based on the speed and number of prisms collected after each level, and If you manage to unlock all the prisms you will unlock an additional level bringing the total to 26 levels of gameplay.

screen-big-03There are  two methods of control in EDGE. My preferred method is to slide my finger along the screen. You can also choose to switch to accelerometer controls, but there are no adjustments and I found myself dying way to often for my liking.

Graphically EDGE is pretty sterile. The levels are composed of nothing but white and grey tiles on star based space background with the only real color coming from your Pulsating cube, moving blocks, and the prisms you need to collect.

However the Atmosphere and creative nature of each level is outstanding and something you should experience. Take for example on level 13 you will encounter a set of blocks you must ride that transform into a robot and you will need to maintain your cube while it walks to the next set of platforms. I found moments like these excellent, and any lack of console graphics where immediately set aside.

Audio wise the game is pretty fantastic. The erie space themed music featured throughout the levels sounds like something straight out of a SCI-FI movie right before something terrible happens. Your cubes movements have a solid and non irritating tone as well, and the blocks and levers seem to have a nice solid tone to them as well.

Controlling the cube is not hard but it is going to take some getting used to the controls. There are some pretty touch sections but there are some tutorial sections nearby which will show you exactly how to get past certain obstacle’s.

This is why I wouldn’t classify the game as a Puzzle game. There really isn’t anything to figure out. The levels play themselves out in a linear fashion and any troubled spots have a tutorial to help you pass them. I’m not complaining about that fact as the creative and artistic level designs are good enough for me to recommend you support this developer.

This is the reason the iPhone and iTouch devices are going to continue to grow in popularity. Developers can take a chance on a new idea and occasionally something unique and positive will emerge.

EDGE definitly is one of these titles, and anyone remotely interested in gaming should give this a try, and to those who might say there are only 26 level I would ask you would you rather have 26 levels of great gameplay or 50 mediocre levels?

This game looks cool, but a little glitchy. I would love to get it, but I would have to wait for a price drop. Nice Reviews!!

I wasn’t thinking about buying this app until I saw your review! I saw it on youtube first, and stumbled onto this site after watching. I am now a member and hopefully I might win an app!

This game is on my “potential games to get” list. Artistic style and gameplay (fully using the iphone accelerometer) seem very well done. Like many, I think having a “lite” version of the game with a few levels is all I’d need to make the plunge.

    i love this game

Thanks for the cool review and video. The app looks cool but a little pricy but with the update it would be worth it.

  9. SilentRider says:

Nice review. Looks great, and since it doesn’t have a timer it would be fun for me.
Thanks for the article and video. Always love to see games been played so we can get a feeling for the game.

thanks Silent welcome to the site…

I’m trying to get them out as fast as possible, but until I get some help its going to be a bit slower than I would like.

For some reason, I’m reminded of those Super Mario Sunshine levels in those dark areas where Mario loses his water pack and has to do some pure platforming. They are fast, on-edge, and intense, just as EDGE looks like. Can’t wait to play it.

Reminds me an old NES game. It was a ball that you had to move to the end of the level. Was one of my favorite game. This time it is a square ! I think I’ll give it a try !

  12. wiredmind says:

very cool game. nice movements and finger gliding game.

  13. Bessamy says:

This looks like a cool app. It is so different from all the other iphone gamming apps. I will have to check this one out.

  15. Glenn says:

Welcome all of you to the site!

The game isnt that short. I mean you can easily get 6 hours out of it trying to collect all the prisms.

The game is $5.99 right now but you are qualified now to win the free copy were giving away by just posting in this thread.

However you must sign up and be a member. Lurkers can post but not win..

I am working on the site still so we will be adding updated pricing and more features once I get things ironed out..

  16. Brandon says:

I had heard of this but didn’t know it was anything to actually consider. Now I’m excited to try it. How much does it cost?

  17. Chris says:

After watching/reading your review, it really looks interesting to me. I like these little appetizer games, it does make me want to play a bigger version on Xbox Live arcade and/or PSN. Both platforms would handle this game extremely well.

    Another game called
    Auditorium
is making its way to the iPhone in the near future. It’s really fun too.

  18. Montrealien says:

Game looks great, I`ll have to give it a try. I`ll be buying it if I don`t get a free copy :D

  19. ipressbuttons says:

hmm dunno it looks amazing! but seems or rather sounds pretty short.

  20. rorreyguy says:

this game looks great because there is multiple levels and seems like you can really get hooked on this game but also challenging so you cant beat it really fast. over all i think this game should get a 7.5/10

  21. Glenn says:

I understand your concern Ghost, but let me ask you this is $6.00 going to break you? I know we have gotten used to .99 games on the iPhone but as a gamer I have spent 60.00 on PS3 or XBOX 360 games and even 29.99 on Wii games and felt RIPPED off over poor gameplay, and 6-7 hour’s worth of time.

This game will give you good gameplay, and last you about 4 hours of fun for a third of the cost!

    • GhostRider says:

You have a point there. I finally bought Rolando like a week ago waiting for a price drop after hearing the game was short. And you know what; I haven’t finished it yet, but I feel like I already got $10 of enjoyment out of it.

Hopefully developers start doing more Lite versions. The only game that I’ve played similar to this game was Echochrome for PSP, but it seems they are quite different from each other.

  22. GhostRider says:

This looks like a fun game after watching the video and reading about it, but I don’t know if $6 is a fair price for it. That’s why I’m holding on buying it and waiting for a price drop.

If they would release a Lite version so I can “test the waters”, then I could have a better understanding for it. If I like it after playing the Lite, I would buy it in an instant.

More developers should do this. You don’t know how many games I have bought after playing it’s Lite version.
