Funky Punch Review

If your a fan of Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, or many of the other types of fighting styled games Funky Punch might fill the void on your iDevice quite nicely.

The Objective in Funky Punch is to Run, Jump, Kick, Punch, and Dance your way to victory in this action packed, 3D fighter. Do you have what it takes to become the ultimate Funky Warrior?

14Funky Punch consists of 13 selectable fighters each with their own unique fighting styles ranging from Ninjas to Jolly Ol Saint Nick himself. Five different themed fighting arenas and 5 different gameplay modes along with 10 different Skill Belt Achievements.

My first fear was how easily would I be able to pull off combo moves on the iPhone? Surprising it works pretty well.
All movement is done through a virtual D pad on the left of the screen. On your right there are three buttons which are used to pull off your moves.

You have your basic moves for each character such as jump, punch, kick, and defend which can be used by hitting the buttons on the right. However when mixing these buttons with the D Pad you can unleash each characters special abilities based on your character once your “funky” meter is full. For example if your playing as the basketball star one of your funky moves would be to toss a huge Basketball into the air and have it land on the enemies head doing more damage and possible stunning them.  If basketball just isn’t you thing how about some break dance moves to dazzle your opponent?

These special abilities actually make the game quite unique as each player has their own playing style. So there is plenty of replay ability built into the game, and the addition of an 3D movement  adds a nice touch to the game instead of being stuck in a 2D.

There are 5 Gameplay modes included Training, Practice, Quest (with a storyline), Trial, Survival, and EmotiMania (You vs 3) each with its own set of achievements as well.

There is no Online or multiplayer features, and the scoreboard is all local as well.

There are 4 Difficulty levels in “Funky Punch”, but it would take some real skill to move past Normal in my opinion, and while the controls are pretty tight I just can’t seem to pull of moves fast enough as evidenced in my gameplay video below :( your mileage may very as well.

You can pause the game at any time and look at the button combination for your character as well.

13As for the Graphics I was overall impressed with it. The graphics are all done in a cartoon style, and there are even a few characters that are stick men. Bright color palettes and animated background textures add to the overall look and fell of a cartoon world.

There is no Blood or fatality moves so those looking for that kind of violence will have to stick to the consoles right now.

Audio wise the game is good. With varying theme music and decent sound effects there is nothing to distract you from the game.

Overall I think “Funk Punch” is a good game for the iDevices, and does a good job of filling the fighting genre’s glaring hole on the iDevice. However like I stated I did find it pretty challenging even on normal maybe a bit too hard either that or Im just not cut out for these types of games (as evidenced by video below once again!)  These catoon fighters bring it and if you’r not on your A game you in for a beat down.

As for me I really need to get back to the game because being beaten down by a questionably dressed break dancer has gotten my ego in a bit of a tissy this am, and I sear vengeance will be mine..
