G Review

by Bob on 05/13/2009

I have to admit when I first started playing “G” by Some Games I was a little confused. I looked over things and thought I was about to embark on some sci-fi game. All the elements were there in the very opening of the game, but after a few moments I realized this wasn’t the game I thought I was signing up for.

picture-25It took me a little while until I could get past what I thought I was playing and start enjoying what I was actually playing, which is a really wonderful puzzle game full of great art, sound, physics… and best of all, a big challenge.

The idea behind G is that you are working for a company (you actually get to choose from several) as a sounding officer. I’m still not sure of the reasoning, but your job is to shoot rockets by targets and then “ping” them with sonar. The hard part is that you have to deal with all sorts of gravitational elements, Iceteroids, Theophosphorus, and Quicksand Clouds. You’ll be doing a lot of work to make sure that your job gets done.

You will have to make adjustments to the shot angle, power of your rockets and the length of the burn before firing them off. I really like how both of these elements come into play with G. Usually with games like this you’re just using angle and power. The element of “burn time” makes things very different.

Once you shoot your rocket you then have to press a button to send the “ping”. Even if you got the firing part right you can still mess up when on this element. Again, this is a way that G has separated itself from other games of this sort. And it’s another really good separation.

Obviously you’ve got a really challenging game to play here, but Soma Games has really gone all out on the full look and feel of the game. Hand painted artwork looks stunning on the screen, and I’ve always been a sucker for space ships that look like submarines. That’s the really cool side of “steampunk” I love.

picture-34The sounds are also very strong. From the rockets to the music, you’ve got “first rate” written all over this App.

A lot of puzzle games really don’t worry about a story, but G has woven a nice little plot through things. You are trying to uncover the mystery of “The Rain”. And it’s not just you, there’s a lot of companies and mercenaries all trying to get the same thing (remember, I said you get to choose). And it seems that things are going to keep going as Soma Games says that this is part one of a three game series. I don’t know if that means they’ll be the same type or different, but I’m intrigued.

G has taken the old “aim and shoot” genre of game and has taken things to a whole new level. You’ll have to spend a lot of time (and more than a few frustrating moments) with this game to get to the mystery of The Rain. The good news is that you’ll have a great time doing it.

The Good

Game Play Is Very Good
Great Looking & Sounding Game
Very Challenging

The Bad

You’ll Find That This Could Be Too Challenging
This Is Only Part One (Could Be Good Or Bad)

Just a head’s up folks. We have a bug patch in front of Apple right now that should be live any minute. After that, we have at least three rounds of updates to add some cool new functionality…
Thansk very much for all ourt kind words and the constructive criticism too. We really want to make some great games here at Soma, not just throw away widgets and feedback makes a huge difference.

Wow, the overall presentation of the game looks wonderful. The mechanics are completely new to me but the concepts seem familiar.

Plus, How can you not trust a guy in a Hot Tamales shirt?

Challenging is a good thing as long as it is not a cheap “this is not possible” challenging.

Nice review! Games like this are part of why I love the App Store. Developers are creating new and inventive game styles because there isn’t too much risk in losing money. Looks like a really cool game.

I don’t see why it being challenging is a bad thing. I think gamers are getting to soft nowadays in the sense that they want their games spoon-fed to them and they’ll throw a tantrum is it takes them longer than 20 minutes to get past one part.
I love games that challenge, that is the essence of a game, to adapt, learn, and conquer.

Graphics, unique gameplay and a s/f story line. I’m there…

…as long as it’s not as hard as that old-school lunar lander game. I still have unpleasant flashbacks from that one.

Wow, this reminds me of games I used tobplay like Space Penguin, but much deeper! I could use the challenge.
