Gemmed

With the multitude of various match-3 games in the app store, it is hard to decide which ones are worthy of your money. Gemmed is a nice twist on a classic game, and provides fans of the genre a great gaming experience.

The main goal in Gemmed is to get the colorful cube shaped monsters to their respectively colored exits. These monsters will eat gems of the same color that fall around them and take their spots on the screen. You accomplish this by manipulating the picture-24environment around the monsters. You can move the gems by swapping them for the one directly next to it, a la bejeweled, in order to create three or more of the same colored gems in a row.

While the game does seem very much like a simple bejeweled clone, it is actually much more of a strategy game. You have to plan and figure out how you are going to get the monsters to the exit. It starts off easy, but quickly becomes very challenging. Gemmed includes fifty different levels of increasing difficulty to go along with the increasingly addictive game-play as well.

As you go through the levels, there will be an increasing number of monsters, which will appear in a variety of different colors. Each colored monster has its own individual power-up to aid you along the way. These power-ups can be activated by simply swapping them with another gem. If you would like to save the power-up, just do not use it, and it will appear on the next level’s grid.

The power-ups that I have encountered thus far are color palettes, which will color several of the gems on the board the same color, as well as jewels; which when cleared from the board will add a hefty bonus to your score. I have also seen sticks of dynamite, which will clear a 3×3 portion of the board, as well as a multi-colored gem which will act as any color.

picture-12If you cannot find any moves, simply do not touch the screen for fifteen seconds. After doing so, gems which can be moved to form three in a row will flash. After there are no moves left, the game is over. You do, however, get one replay. This will allow you to replay the level you died on.

Once you beat a level, it will display the time it took for you to beat the level, which medal you have received (gold, silver, or bronze depending on your time), and what your total score is as well. The game also displays the total time you’ve played, which is nice because you can see how much time you’ve wasted on your iDevice!

Gemmed features both local and global high scores, so you can compete against the rest of the world. The current global high score is over seven million points, so it should take quite a while before you master the game. The game also features some very catchy in game music, which fits the game nicely. There are also some nice sound effects which work well with the music. The controls involve swiping the gems you would like to switch, and they are very responsive and well done. The game-play is dynamic, so you do not need to wait for animations to finish before making your next move. Gemmed also saves your progress, which is a must for almost any game. Fans of the puzzle/match-3 genre should find Gemmed worthy of its $2.99 asking price.

I love bejeweled games and this seems a twist to the game with some cute monsters added. I will give this a way because of this twist in the game.

This looks like another bejeweled clone but it looks pretty good, the presentation is pretty good for a match three game.

Thanks for the replies! I think you’ll get a lot more out of this than a typical match-3 game. We actually regret promoting it initially that way. :) Hold tight though, we have an update just approved by Apple, so Gemmed is unavailable in the App Store currently. It should be available any time, along with a sale price for a few days! If $0.99 is still a stretch, definitely check out the Lite version, it gives a great perspective on how much different this game is than the traditional match-3 genre.

Oh, and check out our website for details on what will be in the update!

Not sure what I think of this title.

There’s a lot of match 3 games out there, I wonder if it is different enough to stand…
