geoDefense Review

geoDefense is a recently released Tower Defense game with some great vector graphics and overall polish. Now there are quite a few TD games in the app store (24 to be exact), but geoDefense is one worth your time and money.

geoDefense is a listed as a Thinking Man’s Action Tower Defense, and I can atest that it is! Though the controls are familiar, the gameplay is decidedly different:   You have to develop a strategy and, at the same time, execute in real-time when things are moving fast.

The developer explains it as a chess match.  There is your opening moves, which are setting the stage for how you will win the level.  The middle game is where you do your busy work of getting built-up for the final push at the end.  The end game is where it gets completely crazy!  If you didn’t have a strategy up until this point, no amount of fast fingers will save you.

When you first open up the game, you will be greeted with a menu containing buttons to each of the three difficulty levels, an Options button, and an About button. There are 5 tower types with 7 levels each and consists of 30 levels each its own puzzle with its own rules. This gives you a lot of playtime and great replayability.

The graphics in geoDefense are one of the best things about the game. When you enter a level, the bright colors and simple shapes will drag you right into the gameplay. The mazes are easily visible and by looking at them you can tell that a lot of thought was put into each one. To survive, you have to place your towers in the correct spot or you will not make it past all the waves. While playing, your towers are at the bottom, on the right there is a pause button, and on the left there is a button to send out the next wave.

picture-113The sounds in this game fit well and add to the retro feel of the game. When you choose a level you will hear “WARNING! Meltdown imminent!” in a sweet robotic voice that gives it a nice 80′s touch. The towers each have their own nice sound that doesn’t get repetitive or annoying. Each time you lose a life, a voice will say the number of towers you have remaining. The enemies themselves don’t make a noise, but this is not a problem.

The controls in this game need a little work. They are placed using a “drag and drop” method that works well, but your finger covers up the tower so you cannot see exactly where you are placing it. There have been numerous times where the tower is just a tiny bit too far away from where I wanted it to be, and therefore this can lead you to lose (yes, tower placement is that crucial!)

The one thing that I can find wrong with this game is the difficulty level. BE WARNED. This game is definitely not for beginners or people who are new to the TD genre. You will die in this game… a lot. The difficulty factor can actually be a benefit though to those more inclined to playing a Tower Defense game, because when you finally destroy that last creep, you know you fought hard for your victory. Playing this game gives you a good sense of reward.

Overall this is a great game that was made with lots of love and works perfectly on the iPhone. Little flaws here and there may hinder the gameplay, but it’s nothing that can’t be fixed in a simple update.

THE GOOD
-Great vector graphics
-Retro sounds
-Simple and fun gameplay, great for any TD lover
THE BAD
-Difficult for beginners
-Minor control issues that prevent the game from its full potential

  4. Chumbake says:

I gotta be honest, I’m a little burned out about TD games. But the graphics in this look GREAT. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. Thanks Glen.

Also, I think that it’s funny that it’s “simple and fun gameplay”, but “difficult for beginners.” :)

I’m sure what is meant is that it’s simple to play, but the strategy is hard.

  5. baseballbaby86 says:

looks like a nice game. Nice graphical style and good looking gameplay.

  6. tofunoodle says:

  7. B master says:

I’m a big fan of td games (even though I first discovered it in January). So this one looks like a keeper! :)

  8. schmidty says:

unfortunately, im a beginner at tower defense games so this may be really hard for me. But, it still looks cool and i still want to try it out.

Great review. It’s nice to see some more origanals in the appstore. With all the other tower defense games in the app store it’s hard to figure out which ones are worth buying. Also for only .99$ its a steal. The graphics are awesome too. The retro look is loads better than the other tower defense games except for a couple games.

  10. jonesin says:

nice looking td game. Dont have too many but this still seems like a great game.

  11. Bessamy says:

After watching the video, I also love the explosions! Thanks for the video review! Once I get better at TD games this will be a must have!

  12. hidiho says:

I think the graphics add a unique twist to other tower defense games.

  13. fleabag323 says:

I absolutely love tower defense games! There never can be too many good quality ones, and this one looks great!

  14. coldfusion says:

i have a few td games on my phone, namely fieldrunners and the creeps but this game still seems pretty unique. Cool graphics, tough difficulty, and a unique style makes it seem really good.

  15. Big Albie says:

I’m a big fan of geoDefense, and it’s really a fun and extra challenging. As Glenn alludes to, if you’re a beginner, geoDefense will be even more difficult. Other TDs I play with are 7 Cities and Besiegement, and geoDefense easily makes the short list of great apps.

  16. irene1975y says:

this game certainly looks like small colored gems having a life of their own and shooting in mayhem mode.

  17. Bessamy says:

Ooohhhhhh WOW! This game looks so darn cool! I just love the colors! It is all my favorite colors put together in one game and it is a TD to boot!!!

  18. Mr_Sinisterr says:

looks a lot like geometry wars. which i love. looks good

  19. Nato94 says:

this looks like geometry wars but its a tower defense game, i love both of those things.

  20. raoupp says:

And I thought i’d got rid of td games… But this one with it’s retro look and challenging gameplay changed that.

  21. greenhornet9 says:

sweet looking td game. Im not always a fan of retro graphics but these seem nice. Great review Glenn!

  22. Lux Ambassador says:

I haven’t really felt tempted by any games in the Tower Defense style until now. Of course, now you’re telling me that as a noob this might be too difficult for me. Hmmmmm. What to do…what to do…what to do…

  23. troile00 says:

This one looks pretty sweet. It looks like the difficulty level is pretty high, so anyone playing it should be occupied for some time. Looking forward to adding this to my collection! I wonder if they can add a survival mode in this kind of TD where balance seems key to gameplay….

  24. worldcup1100 says:

    A best if both worlds…

    TD games and retro graphics

    Sounds really hard too

  25. jacksonitup says:

this game looks amazing! Im a td nut and i love retro graphics. ive heard the game is really hard but i prefer it hard to too easy. Nice review.

  26. Mr. Charley says:

    Old school vector graphic goodness

  27. Matthew says:

that is one of my most-wanted apps at the moment…..
    i like td-apps
and there are many level and the layout is very nice

  28. Master Shake says:

The only other issue I had is that it would be nice if you could select a target but a great game (for only $1) if you’re looking for a challenge.

  29. Andy says:

I’m sorry, on behalf of Glenn I’m sure it was a mistake. Please understand that he has to deal with a lot of emails!

  30. Glenn says:

THis is being taken care of. We are getting you a fresh new code. Sorry for this..
