iWire

If you are looking for a simple yet elegant game that you cannot put down, look no further than iWire by Origin8.

iWire is indeed one of those simple yet elegant games that you simply cannot put down. It’s addictive, and makes you want to play ‘just one more time’. I found the game much more interesting than I initially thought it would be as well.

In iWire, you tilt your iPhone left and right to keep a ring from slicing through the twisting and turning wire. It sounds pretty simple, but it actually becomes pretty hard very quickly. The game features three difficulty modes: easy, medium, and hard. However, medium and hard both need to be unlocked by beating the difficulty mode below it.

The graphics in iWire are simple, but nearly perfect. I loved the look and all-around feel of the game. However, one thing that puzzled me was the layout. The game’s menus and game over screens (even the countdown to starting a game) are oriented in portrait mode; however your score and multiplier (I will cover that in a moment) are oriented in landscape mode. This is extremwireely confusing, because turning your head to view the score while at the same time making sure the wire doesn’t suddenly swerve and kill you is nearly impossible.

In iWire, there is no pause button, which can be frustrating if you need to go to the bathroom or need to simply pause the game for whatever reason. I am hoping one will be included with an update.

In iWire, the main element is your score. To get the highest scores, you need to get a high multiplier. The multiplier will increase by one every fifteen seconds, up to a limit of an 11x multiplier.

iWire does not automatically kill you when you scrape the wire – you have to completely slice through it to lose. However; scraping it will cause the wire to turn red, and that will cause your multiplier to decrease by one. Scraping the wire will cause you to slow down as well, which is bad because the slower you go, the less points you will obtain.

I have mixed feelings about the audio in iWire. When I first opened the app, I was giwirereeted by a sort of robotic (and very annoying) noise, which thankfully only lasted a few seconds. It is one of those sounds that if your volume is low, it’s not too bad, but when your volume is up (Or if you are connected to speakers like I was), it just sounds terrible. It turns out that this sound repeats itself during the countdown to the game as well. I did, however, find the in-game music and other sound effects to be of very high quality, and I liked them a lot.

iWire has global leaderboards as well. They are sorted into easy, medium, and hard as well, so it is nice and easy to sift through them. I am very happy that global leaderboards were included, because without them, I don’t really know whether or not I would have come back to this app again and again.

Overall, iWire is deceptively simple, but packs a big punch in terms of gameplay and graphics. It’s unique, and as I previously state, I keep wanting to play it ‘just one more time’. It has a few kinks to work out, but for such a dirt cheap price, it’s hard to go wrong. If you’re into simple and addictive games, this one’s for you!

The Good

- Great graphics

- Simple and addictive gameplay

- Global leaderboards add an immense amount of replay value

The Bad

- The aforementioned annoying sound

- Weird layout for score and multiplier

- No pause button
