Last Cannon Review

by Glenn on 05/18/2009

Two of my favorite games growing up were Space Invaders and Missile Command. In fact Space Invaders was when my father and my bottom first learned about burning in an images on your TV set.

picture-36Now developer Shadi Muklashy is attempting to bring that same addictive gameplay to the iPhone and iTouch with a modern re-mix of Space Invaders and Missile Command.

The object of Last Cannon is to protect your base from the invading enemy Knurlings. Very game initially plays very similar to Space Invaders where the enemy will move from side to side dropping down a row each time. If the Knurlings get past your cannon you will lose one of your existing flags. Lose 4 and the game is over.

Your cannon is controlled by tilting the iDevice left or right. You have three basic weapons. The laser beam which is used to change the color of the enemy as well as hold an enemy in place.

This allows you to group two or more enemies for easy dispersal. Rockets which are used to destroy Knurlings, and the bombs which are used to clear everything on the screen.

When you being the game you will have a fixed number of rockets in your arsenal as you destroy sets of Knurlings you will gain additional rockets. Kill 1 Knurling and you get nothing. Kill 2 and you get one additional rocket, kill 3 and you get two rockets etc, etc.

Knurlings must be in the same color sets to get additional rockets. This is where the laser beam comes in to play. By laser beaming Knurlings you can change their color so you can create colored sets to rocket.

picture-46As you progress the action becomes fast and furious, meteors will also fall which must be destroyed before they hit your base.

When the action gets to hectic you can use your bomb. This will clear all the enemies from the screen. The Bomb will generate slowly as you kill Knurling sets.

Sadly the game does not have an online score-board though there is a local one.

Graphically the game is nice. The backgrounds are all black and white, while the Knurlings and other objects are rendered in color.

There is a nice retro sci-fi soundtrack playing in the background as well which adds to the frantic gameplay.

Overall Last Cannon is a great pick up and play tribute to the games of yesterday, sure it’s been updated and changed around a bit but you can see that Missile Command and Space Invaders where a direct influence on this game.

In fact to be mentioned with these both should tell you something about the game. Anyone who’s looking for quick, challenging and addictive arcade shooter shouldn’t pass this one up.

The Good

Nice update to classic game
Addicted gameplay

The Bad

No online scores
No additional backgrounds

This game looks great, but lack of online scores kills it for me. :(

Ahh, Glenn’s never-ending quest for global leader boards continues! :D

Seriously!! Why not it’s not complicated and it adds replay incentive. I have played som many simple games that have kept me alot longer than it should because of the leaderboard competition.

I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you again when I send you my first game. :(

It’s not feasible for us initially since my girlfriend is literally learning the code as she writes this game a our 2nd job. However, It is something I plan on adding in an update after release assuming it’s popular enough.

I notice from the video that you can detonate the rocket which is a great touch.

How is the responsiveness of the cannon? does it move quickly or is it sluggish?

Glenn May 18, 2009 at 11:21 am

the cannon moves effortlessly with tilting. It’s pretty spot on.
