Linx

One of my favorite games growing up was Qix, for those unfamiliar with Qix it is a game where you attempted to fence off and claim areas of the screen while avoiding the Qix moving across the screen. The Developers of Linx have take that formula and ran with it creating an entirely new type of game.

Linx is a single player action game based around the simple concept of drawing a line from opposing squares of the same color while avoiding bouncing balls across the game board thus creating a linx.

link1In principle that sounds easy enough, but I can assure you that as the game progresses into higher levels it’s going to take more than quick reflexes to stay alive!

The game board is is composed of colored squares located around the border with your score, number of lives, count down timers, and the number of links needed to complete the level displayed across the top portion of the screen.

Initially you begin the game with one ball and four different colors around the board. Scattered throughout these squares you will see bombs, smart bombs, and rainbow squares. Each of these when “linked” have an positive effect on surrounding squares that will help you complete the current level.

While creating these links you need to be careful as to not have your link come in contact with any moving objects in their playing field. Add to that the fact that each link has a time limit and you have yourself one serious problem as you progress.

With each passing level additional balls, faster speeds, and more color selections are added to the playing field making you think, draw, and breath faster than previous levels.

If you get stuck and can seem to find a matching set of colors you can shake your device to rotate the color squares, but there is a limit of 3 shakes per level.

As a reward for those who create Linxs in succession you will be granted special bonus rewards like the ability to slow down balls,  remove balls from the playing field,  or add additional time to your counter. These rewards go along way to helping reduce the frantic pace of the game.

Graphically the game is colorful but static, simple colored squares with red moving balls, and what little animations there are look smooth. I would like to see some additional animations for each link I create to break the visuals up some.

Audio Wise there is very little as well. Just the sound of the line as it’s drawn and the clicking of the linx as they are created.  I’m not sure you could do much more with this type of game but maybe some background music for the levels would liven it up some?

However the gameplay is unique and addictive and in a ever crowded app store it’s getting harder and harder to make “something different” and Linx has managed to do just that. Your always thinking and looking for your next linx while trying to dodge multiple objects bent on your destruction.

Overall Linx is a great break from the norm. With endless gameplay limited only by your ability to think and draw fast I can see myself piddling away the moments waiting on the bus, or train with this unique and frantic action based puzzler.

For those still on the fence about this app the developer has released a free lite version of the game as well, but do the man a favor spend the $.99 and help reward someone for trying something different!

Finally, a Qix-type game that brings something new to the table. There are tons of Qix clones, but this is the first with a major rule change.

Qix was a cool arcade game. Linx has a very cool look to it. I just love all the colors. I really like the idea of bonus rewards and the ability to shake to rotate the squares. That is a nice twist of the game.

    Thanks for the review!

Qix was one of my favourite games as well growing up. I remember playing that in the arcades (when people actually went to arcades)
