Megatouch Photo Hunt Review

I always thought that the idea of “Spot The Difference” games in bars was a pretty cruel idea. I mean after a few drinks it’s hard to spot the difference between an attractive girl and a drag queen (I’ve said too much).

Still, they’re popular and the undisputed king of the bar top gaming world, Megatouch, had the best of the Photo Hunt games. And now, thanks to the App Store, you can have it with you wherever you go. And not only do you not have to plunk quarters down at the local watering hole to play it, but you also can have a fighting chance at seeing those differences without the beer goggles.

By now we’re fairly familiar with the concept behind these games. You’re given two images side by side that, at first, appear to be the same picture. But after a little closer examination you’ll see that there are slight alterations in the photos and you have to find all five of them before the time runs out.

Megatouch Photo Hunt is not the first game in this market (not even the first I’ve reviewed for this site) but it does have a good heritage to it and it brings all of that with it to present a very nice experience. Clearly, if this is your cup of tea, Megatouch is the cup to be sipping from.

Game controls are very easy. You just touch the screen where you think there is an alteration and if you’re right you’ll see a green circle. If you’re wrong you get a red “x” and your time meter will take a hit. You’ve got five differences to spot and must get them all before the time runs out to make it to another level.

You also get three clues to locations that you can use to help you. Keep in mind that there are only three of them so save them for when you’re really in trouble.

The photos look great on the device and they are nice a varied so you’re not looking at the same sort of things over and over. Though there is only 150 images currently in the game so there is a limit at the moment. Hopefully the Megatouch will release more images with upcoming updates.

Another thing I hope gets a little look-see by the devs is some options in the sound. The background music is annoying and it would be nice to bring down the music while keeping the other sound effects going. I’m no fan of the music, but I like to have the warning sounds tell me that I’m almost out of time because I get so focused on the pictures that I tend not to look over at the timeline bar.

Games like Photo Hunt are a nice break from the basic puzzle games or the typical shoot-em-ups. I like to have something different to do when I’ve got a few minutes to kill and these games are a perfect way to do that.

The good news for fans of the genre is that the king has come to take his place on the throne. All of the pretenders can take a step back and make room. Megatouch Photo Hunt gives the masses the game they’ve been truly waiting for.

And it’s a lot cheaper than hitting the bars… only you can decide whether that’s a good thing or not.
