My Brute Review

The hit online fighting game My Brute has been ported to the iDevices by Hysteria Project developer Bulkypix. The game works well on the platform, but players wanting more than a casual experience may be disappointed.

picture-14The premise of the game is to fight battles with other players around the world and to gain experience points, skills, and weapons to help your brute become the best in the world. There is plenty of playtime, as there are over 70 skills and weapons to unlock, with eight arenas waiting to be unlocked as well.

When you first start up the game, you are able to choose a class of fighter that will roughly determine which skills and stats you receive in the game: dodging, speed, or strength. In addition, you can train under a master or become a master yourself in order to unlock special skills and weapons. This adds a “clan” aspect to the game, as you can train several brutes in the same dojo.

There is a crippling problem with the controls in this game…you can’t control anything. After choosing a class and whether to be a part of a dojo, the only part of the game you can control on a regular basis is which opponent to fight.

You level up, increasing your stats and giving you new weapons and skills, by fighting, but you can’t control which categories your new stats are attributed to or which weapons and skills you get. In addition, you have no control in a fight over when or which weapons are used. That being said, the in game menus are done well and it is easy to cycle through them, whether you are choosing an auto-match that the game makes for you or searching for a specific friend.

However, here lies another disappointment: the iPhone version is not integrated with the PC version. Thus, when Glenn challenged me to a fight, I had to make a web account in order to end his undefeated run. This aside, the online component works very well and you are able to fight anyone in the world; in addition, you can chat with your friends via OpenFeint or challenge your friends on Facebook.

picture-161The graphics department is where this game really shines. The characters are nicely and uniquely animated, and in all the fights I’ve had so far, my character has looked vastly different from my opponent. The fighting sequences are vivid and fluid, and although you can’t control anything in the fights, I always found myself on the edge of my seat wondering if my character would triumph.

The audio in My Brute is superb as well. The music really adds to the atmosphere of the fights, and it reminds me of those cheesy kung-fu movies. The sound effects are nice and varied as well, and the gong sounds and “hiyyahh!” sounds really fit in nicely with the fights.

Overall, My Brute is nice pick-up-and-play game, but I can’t see myself playing the game for long stretches. The fact that you can only fight five times per day limits the daily playtime as well. Although this helps maintain balance against players who would spend all day playing, this number should have been increased to more, as it only takes 5-10 minutes to complete five fights.

There are eight save slots for different brutes, but I would like to focus on one character rather than juggle between several. My Brute is not for those who want to be “in the game” at all times, but for those wanting a casual online daily diversion, My Brute might be for you.

The Good:

Great fight sequence animations
Cool music and sound effects
Good online connectivity
Over 70 skills and weapons and eight arenas to unlock

The Bad:

You have virtually no control over your brute
Five fight per day limit
Not integrated with web version

(Please forgive me this was the only video I found with creation and fighting the music this guy choose is awful)

This game is very fun. When you first play the game, you’ll be asked if you have a “Master” Just type in the code BBJAAJFE, and you’ll get double experience for the first three days as well as earning each of your brutes a CAT skill.

Never heard of this one before, could be cool though.

  9. coldfusion says:

the web version is pretty fun at first, but then you realize you are really doing nothing but putting in time each day and clicking a button and its not fun anymore. :D

  10. VeganTnT says:

I tried the web version and really liked it but I don’t see myself playing it since I’m rarely on my laptop. If I had it on my iphone I’d definitely play daily, but I don’t think it’s worth $5 bucks :/

  11. Ricky says:

I checked out the online version. It’s good that it has some depth into the game. But I agree with the others, you should be allowed infinite number of battles per day. Anyway, this game is separate from the online version (there is no integration) so all the more reason to allow the fee-paying players to have more freedom to play!

  12. MichaelMurtagh says:

Five Fights Per Day Is Rediculous, If You Pay 4.99 For An App You Should get to Play It As Much As You Want!

  13. greenhornet9 says:

i tried this out online and its kind of fun. Definitely not worth $5 but it may be worth 1 or 2 bucks.

  14. cathy says:

With only 5 fights a day $5 seems a little overpriced

  15. ErichD says:

Reminds me that i have to go train awesometush on the web site… maybe it’s back up by now?

One of the attractive things to the site is that it’s free — there’s no real interactivity at all, and abilities are randomly assigned (which the iPhone version seems to fix?).

    Something to consider.

  16. Mr. Charley says:

This game sounds fun, even though somewhat restricted.
I’m a fan of MMO’s and although can only play for 5-10 minutes without controlling too much, I still find these games highly addictive

  17. bman says:

It seems fun but people spam this game in different sites a lot. Oh well seems cool.

  18. Glenn says:

I love this game, yea it’s a bit disappointing that you don’t have more control over it. But I look forward to logging in each day for 10 minutes and kicking some butt!

I started off slow but my brute is now a POWERHOUSE! well my BEAR :)

  19. JCman7 says:

Looks cool but its a shame you dont have a lot of control and only 5 fights seems a little low but still seems worth a try
