Pirates: Sea Battle 2
Ahoy mateys. Tis time for stashing ye booty and hiden ye whenches as piratin da high seas boreds ye iDevice.
I have always been a fan of Pirates and constantly argue why they are better than ninjas with my brother in law. Now all I’ll have to do is pull out my phone to prove my point.
Pirates: Sea Battle 2 opens to a screen that gives you three options, New Game, Continue Game, and How to Play.
Once you start the game you are immediately thrust into battle on the high seas. No intro, no instructions and no explanation to why your fighting for your life. It’s simply kill or be killed.
My first thought was “Wow this game is polished.” When you first start right away you will notice the amazing visuals that this game has. The water looks great, clouds float by, and the water ripples in short waves. It’s also refreshing to see defeated enemy ships sinking to the bottom of the ocean floor instead of just disappearing.
At the moment there are no tilt controls so all your steering is done through the small wheel at the bottom right. This works well for short bursts of gaming but controlling the ship like this after a while may tend to make your finger ache.
Each level begins with a few ships coming from the top of the screen towards you. You need to maneuver your ship into a battle position or boarding position to make quick work of these enemies. By Maneuvering your ship into a battle position you line the sides of your ship up to the enemies and than press the cannon icon located in the bottom left of the screen. It does not matter how far away you are though you will need to take distance and moving speed into the equation before firing.
The second method of battling is the boarding position. In order to use this technique you simply steer your ship into enemies vessels and your crew will battle it out with the enemy.
You will notice that both you and the enemy ships have 3 Lines beside it. The Red line represents your overall health which can not be repaired during levels so take heed to keep your ship safe.
The white line represents the number of crew on board your ship. A simple lesson here would be never board an opposing ship if your white line is smaller than theirs unless you have no other option.
Last but not least we have the black line which represents your cannons. As you fire cannons this line will reduce in size and will slowly fill back up over time. So you will need to pace your cannon shots if you wish to survive for any amount of time.

The game is broken into a number of different levels each has an increasing ship number and/or difficulty. In between stages you get to spend the gold you have plundered on upgrades on your own ship. Upgrades as seen on the left help your ship in many ways, each upgrade starts at $1,000 and costs more each time it is upgraded.
The actual game play is quite enjoyable in short bursts, longer game session will start to work your thumb or fingers into a submission hold from all the turning. However the game is fun and gets very challenging at higher levels.
Overall I’m really enjoyed the game it’s rather short about 6-8 hours to finish it all depending on your strategy. However I wish it would have had some story to it, or some additional gameplay besides pure ship to ship combat. It would have been nice to have you control the boarding battles in some faction to mix it up some Ala the original Pirates games.
Other than a slightly sore thumb I have had no real issues with this game. It’s does what it is designed to do perfectly, and I certainly think it is well worth its currently very low price.
The Good

I love pirate games. Sort of reminds of sid meier’s like hidiho said.
Oh Man, how did I miss this? I love pirates! Looks great. Thanks for doing videos, it really helps in deciding whether or not to get a game.
yeah they rule ther aren’t many pirates game but this is cool i think
Yer, hopefully i’ll win
Pirates Arrgh me hearties
Looks like a pretty nice game, but there’s a lot of unused potential. The inclusion of a story (which i’m guessing will come in an update) could only make it better, giving some kind of goal to the game. Also maybe the inclusion of an actual nemesis *Pirate hero, or Authority* that you battle with from time to time; A boss so to speak.
The graphics look neat though. Can’t wait to see what they do with it.
Ahoy there! For $1 I don’t mind to be short if it is indeed a good game, and by the looks of it, it is.
Going to wait for the contest to be over before I buy it.
Wow that looks great – awesome Review really well done on the video footage!!
I alwayz wanted a pirate game and i was gonna get this but there was no credit left lol
Looks good!!
reminds me a bit of Sid Meier’s Pirates
this game looks great! I like the steering wheel gives a unique feel to the game.
woow cool looks like a game with great story!
The animation controls to steer the ship is great – i can see that in the video. Well done.
But the game play is repetitive. All I can do is steer the ship and keep shooting at ships. It will be great if there are missions to complete like rescue a pirate princess, drop people off on islands find treasures and maybe have the occasional sea monster destroying the pirate ship like pirates of the carribean… can use this as a combo to destroy the surrounding ships.
The video review is great. Perhaps u can disable the video link so that people can stay here instead of navigating to youtube site.
Pirates vs Ninjas…..AARRRRGH!!!!
Now this looks like fun. Might pick it up since it’s so cheap.
Looks like a fun strategy game. Could just be a “treasure” of a game!
That actually looks really fun. The upgrade system looks nice.
Looks pretty cool matey.
i’m glad that the game has upgrades that you can apply to your ship, otherwise the replay value would probably be poor.
looks pretty cool glenn, thanks for the review
There are different levels they just get harder and harder though. On a Side note what does everyone think about the new video size and videos?
There are a couple of reasons I stopped talking over them. #1 time, and #2 People were not visiting the site they would just watch them on Youtube. SO now they need to come here to read the reviews.
The size is fine. I saw the video and it didn’t occurred to me that it was different. Hehe. But yeah, that was a good decision to move the review out of the video.
the videos are fine, don’t necc need to talk through each video when it is usually word for word what your review is. ppl need to read and not be lazy just looking for a video with your review in it. see how it affects your # of views and subscribers on youtube and if it increases the number of people who will come to the site after watching a “review-less” video on youtube
Pirates!! Looks like a fun game. Hope they release more levels.
Arrgh pirates rule! ^^
