Rasta Monkey Review

In Rasta Monkey you play an extraordinarily happy Rastafarian monkey who one day, is asked by his father to help the family out: “You need to collect dem fruits for mi special fruit-shake before mi head go CHAKA CHAKA!…”

In this interesting 2-D platformer, you play a monkey on a quest to collect fruit while swinging across tree branches, grabbing vines, rolling through tunnels, and occasionally fighting off enemies who want to knock you off the trees!

No doubt that many of you have thought of Rasta Monkey as a comparison to Sway, but let me tell you this, they’re not the same!

By pressing and holding any one finger in any of the four corners, the monkey is then moved in those respective directions. Pressing the top half of the screen makes the monkey travel across the top of the branch, while the touching the lower half of the screen makes the monkey swing across the bottom of the branch.

rasta1When two fingers are held on the screen at once, the monkey starts swinging in a circle, and when released, you launch off into the air, with where you go depending on the timing of the release. At first, you’ll find yourself falling off the branches quite frequently, but there are well placed checkpoints placed in the levels so you don’t have to start from the beginning whenever you do.

Still, some sections of the game are repeated quite a lot, but after a while, traveling around the branches and launching off in different directions comes easily. The controls and game mechanics are solid, with some branches being springy, which allows the monkey to launch even further. The platforming physics are well done, and the gameplay is very solid throughout. A few sections of the game may seem boring at first, but the later stages really offer great gameplay.

The graphics are done with an Asian art touch to it, sort of like in the style of the Katamari games. The bright colors and cheerful gameplay make for an extremely enjoyable game. The graphics are well done, with smiling clouds and trees, along with a pleasant color palate. A few of the image edges are a bit rough, but otherwise the game looks excellent and well polished.

rasta3Even the background is well detailed, with refreshing landscapes and an overall calming feel to the game. The funky reggae music boosts the game’s charm factor even more. The music has a nice beat to it, and I actually don’t mind listening to it over long periods of time. The core elements are there for Rasta Monkey, and the additional effects just make it better.

Rasta Monkey is perfect for some casual entertainment. The levels are not extremely long, and some of the levels are creatively designed, but alas, there’s currently only 10 of them, providing for a short, but still enjoyable game. The developers have been working on a new update, to fix some of the problems with image compression, along with resolving glitches, and last of all, more level packs are set to be added!

Currently, Rasta Monkey is already a recommended buy at just $1.99, a steal for that price, and with new levels and content to be implemented later on, there’s no doubt that it should be bought.

The Good

Cute and polished art and music
Highly addictive game mechanics
Great asking price

The Bad

A few image glitches (to be fixed soon)
Could use more levels (more to be added)

buy

This is definitely one of the stranger concepts of games on the iPhone as far as art theme goes.

Looks like it’s pretty fun though.

this game is sorta similar to sway, but in my opinion, a little less polished. both games have plenty of personality, and i really like the interface and many features of this game better.

  7. coldfusion says:

i wonder why they chose to make it a rasta monkey? Looks like fun game regardless. I like the price, the style, and the originality.

ive actually been eyeing this for a bit, even before its release. It seems to have met the hype for most and this review solidifies that. If i dont win, ill probably buy it as it sounds like its well done. Im glad there are updates in the mix. Also, i know you said the levels arent very long, but how long does that mean? Like a few minutes per, or like 1 min or what?

  16. irene1975y says:

Nice levels. I just love the monkey. Wish I could cuddle it. Any idea why the game is called Rasta Monkey?

  18. raoupp says:

I wanna try this game just because the looks and controls. The drug theme is just a cherry top.

  19. im.irish says:

Haha I would get this game just for the Rasta theme. I love the way his father talks!

  20. jacksonitup says:

i know you said this is not sway, but how do the controls stack up against each other? Anyways, it looks like a great game for cheap. I think ill get it at some point.

    • Ben says:

There are some elements that are, like how where you hold the fine gets affect where you go, but in Sway you must use your fingers a lot more by moving them side to side across the screen to swing your character. Here, it’s more about placement, as going over and under the branches matters, and jumping by holding down 2 fingers is a main element. Both are very good games.

  21. palmer11000 says:

i like the way everything looks in the game.

  22. Master Shake says:

Judging by your review I’m glad I bought the game but I still need to play it.
