Rock ‘n’ Roll Review
We hear the phrase, “You Rock!”, a lot. But every time I hear it I am a little sad. I know I shouldn’t be, those saying it are just being nice. They are giving me a compliment. But still I’m sad.
You see, they forgot the “Roll”. Rock and Roll are meant to go together. They are joined at the hip and whenever I hear someone talk about one without the other I think that they’ve broken up. Like “Rock” has gone solo. It’s just not the way things are supposed to be.
Okay, none of that really has anything to do with this review of Rock ‘n’ Roll, I just wanted to make a point. But don’t you feel better knowing that the two of them are together in this game.
Actually, Roll plays a big part in this game. You see, Rock is a prisoner and the only way he will be free is if Roll can go through maze after maze and find all of the notes that were lost in a from a video game. Granted, not the most compelling plot lines for a game (thought it’s better than what Lost is doing) but this game really isn’t about the plot. It’s about the game play.
Your job is to move Roll around a maze looking for those notes. You’ve got two methods to accomplish this feat. One is by constantly turning your device. Roll will always heads down (thanks gravity!). The other way is with a touch control that will let you keep the device still but will still follow the same rules.
I bought Rock ‘n’ Roll when it first came out and there was only the “turning” method. This was easy enough to do, but it got me dizzy quickly. I think this was the main reason I stopped playing it. But when I fired it up again I found the newer control and I have to say that I like it a lot.
The game also has a very wild look to go along with the control. It’s a very vivid and bright. The game seems to jump right off the device. And it’s surprising that with all of this color and movement that the frame rate stays so good. So good in fact that it was able to induce the dizziness I spoke of earlier. I also remember that the released a fun Christmas version of the game as an update… I love it when devs do that sort of thing.
No complaints when it comes to sound. Tag Games made sure that everything about this game was first rate. Both music and sound effects give you the feel that you’ve spent a lot more money on a DS or PSP game.
The game has two modes of play, Clock and Quest. Both of them are pretty much what the name implies. In Clock you will try to beat the clock and best your time and in Quest you are trying to free your buddy Rock.
Rock ‘n’ Roll is easily one of the most polished games you’re likely to find and the price is very good (at press it’s 99 cents). There are several different levels and a variety of worlds as your background. The track record for the developer tells you that they’ve cared about their customers and aren’t afraid to change things up a bit.
All in all, I have to give Rock ‘n’ Roll a big thumbs up. And a big thank you to Tag Games for making sure that Roll isn’t forgotten.
The Good

Sounds cool, is it anything like Rolando??? Sounds kind of similar apart from the whole music thing
wow. it looks really unique and interesting. It seems realy fun to play
It’s very cute….until the little guy bum-rushes you at the end of each level with that maniacal grin on his face! Aauuuuhhhgh!
By the way, am I the only one not getting any audio on this vid?
No this isn’t appVersity’s video its just a youtube video of the game and has no sound.
I don’t think “you rock & roll!” will catch on… Anyway this sounds like the gravity part of rolando which I personally really liked! So I think I’ll definitely have to keep this in mind.
