Sheepish Review

Taking care of sheep is something we’ve had branded into our minds since very, very early. From Bo Peep to Little Boy Blue we’ve had sheep as part of our rhyming schemes. We’ve had shepherds around us in all forms of literature, and we’re even told that we need to count them in order to get sleep. And I don’t even want to get into that freaky Lambchop puppet.

picture-101Are lives are full of sheep and we rarely ever see them in real life. Damn, those sheep seem to have good PR people.

And now we have the little animals in our games, the latest being Sheepish from Pixelthis Limited. Let’s get right to the point on this one… it’s a fun, and hard puzzle game that will have you seeing these sheep in your nightmares… not helping you go to sleep.

Sheepish is a puzzle game in the mold of the various pipe games that are so popular on mobile phones. You are given a set number of pipes and other items that you’ll need to place and rotate to set up a course that will get your sheep where it needs to go (presumably sheering or, worse yet, slaughter – sorry to bring you down). Once you’ve got things in place you let the Sheep go and see if you got it right.

The game gives you plenty puzzles (over 100) to keep you going and there are some fun variations with each playfield. Sometimes you’ll need to put your sheep on a trampoline to get over a fence. There are times when you’ll have to paint your sheep so that it can go in different colored tubes. And you’ll even have to grow or shrink the poor animal so that it can go into the right tubes.

There is a nice since of urgency put into the game. Once you start a level a timer begins and the sooner you finish, the better score you get. This takes away the relaxing approach you get from some puzzle games, but adds the better feeling of frenzy that I enjoy.

The game looks really fun and you’ll find that your friends are watching everything over your shoulder and laughing. The look is very cartoony and perfect for the game. The sound and music also add a lot to the overall fun feel of the game.

I did find that the controls seem to have a little bit of a hiccup. In games where you need to get things done quickly it hurts when the controls aren’t “spot on”. I found myself tapping the screen several times in order to get a pipe to rotate, and sometimes it just went off the screen and I had to put it back. A little work on this would go along way making me happier.

picture-91The game offers the “medal system” to give you a reason to keep trying again, giving you some feeling of replay value, but this doesn’t work as well as you’d like. Once you’ve finished the level it’s pretty easy to go back and do it again with the knowledge of the final result and better your previous time. But I’m not going to be too nitpicky on this one. There are a lot of puzzle to figure out and that’s the real fun part of the game. If you want to go for a better medal, just wait a few days to try it again, that takes away a little of your advantage, and keeps it fun.

Extra puzzles are unlocked along the way and that might be the only real reason to go back and do a puzzle again. And be careful to look at the whole screen before starting. A few puzzles into it and you’ll notice that sometimes you’re taking care of more than one sheep.

Sheepish is a very good puzzle game. Combining elements of pipe gaming with a fun cartoon feel. There is plenty to keep you scratching your head and wanting more.

I think that this is a game that would do really well with a lite version. Something to show you a bit of the fun… and a bit of the frustration. Do this right and I’m sure that people will want the full game.

Get Sheepish if you’re into puzzle games, but don’t be surprised if you want some mint jelly before it’s all over.

Lite versions are nice but I wish there were a mechanism that allowed for demos, instead – a limited version that could be unlocked with a code after purchase. Regardless, this looks like a cute game that my 7-year could enjoy too…so long as it doesn’t get TOO frenzied :-)

seems fun. I like games like this and it seems a little unique compared to the regular pipe games. Anyways, a lite version would be nice. Great Review.

The pictures are too small to see how fun it is.

However, I do like to unlock puzzles while I play games. I tried google the game and i found another Glen on the game developer page. Too bad there are no video of this game available.

For those who want to see larger pictures of the game.

Sounds good from the review but I would have to try it myself before spending that much. Issues with the controls on some of the games I’ve played really gets on my nerves.
