Sliders

Sliders is Match-3 puzzle game, where players slide rows and columns of colored blocks on a 5 by 5 gsliders1rid in order to get 3 in a row or more of the same color. When a match is made, the blocks dissapear and new ones drop in from the top to take their place. Match 4 or 5 blocks for extra points and time/move bonuses. Match special patterns such as crosses and T’s to achieve even greater bonuses.

The 3 game modes available are timed mode, strategy mode, and free play. In timed mode, players try to beat the clock and get as many points as they can before the clock runs out. Strategy mode has no such time constraint, but there are only a limited number of moves. Last of all is free play, where players can practice their moves and get a hang of the game, with no pressure in any way. It’s simple gameplay, similar to how the Aurora Feint games work, but in order to reach the highest score, players must plan ahead and match together more complex formations instead of the basic 3 in a row.

sliders2Sliders’ graphics are rather plain and won’t jump out at you, but they are clean and simple, with bright colors, and a friendly interface. The music and sound effects are not anything out of the ordinary, but the soundtrack is casual and pleasing, with a sort of techno feel to it. The sound effects are just plain clicks and dings for moving and scoring pieces, but they’re not grating or anything. If the sounds just don’t appeal to you, there’s always an in game option to mute them.

Sliders is an average game: people who enjoy puzzlers would like this game, but otherwise there’s not much that makes it stand out. The gameplay has the ability to draw some people in, and if it doesn’t appeal to you right now, it probably won’t in the future. At $1.99 it’s a tad expensive for the basic offerings, with no options like a high scores list, and it doesn’t have as much depth as say, the Aurora Feint games. So pick and choose, it’s really up to you.

The Good

Easy to play
Very casual feel
Clean presentation

The Bad

Doesn’t offer too much
Can get boring quick

Sliders is nicely presented and probably a good diversion here and there. In playing with this, I found the touch controls are responsive and the music fits well. It is what it is.
