Steppin Review

So far I had managed to avoid all of the “treadmill” games on the App Store. Nothing about moving my fingers along a fake treadmill appealed to even the “joke” side of things for me. It was going to take something special to get me to try one… or a review…

So here I am… ready to stretch out my fingers and give Steppin’ a run for its money.

The game play for Steppin’ is fairly simple. You use a finger to touch an object (I’ll go over the picture-41different settings in a moment) and drag it to the bottom of the screen and then get your next finger ready to get the next object. It’s just like the whole “let your fingers do the walking” type of thing. Only with this game you’re not “walking” you’re running… sprinting actually.

I will admit that I went into the game with a “ho-hum” attitude. I looked at it as if it were a kids game and it was my job to review it for the kids. But after the eighth time of “I can beat that last time”, I realized that either this game was a lot better than I thought it would be, or I am just a big kid… actually, both are true.

The game comes with different playing fields that add their own bit of challenges. You start at a pond where you have to run from lily pad to lily pad to reach your goal. You’ll move on to ice bergs, to lava, to Hopsctoch, to a climbing wall. All of these have a nice look to them and are very challenging.

I have to admit that I liked the idea of the climbing wall. I even turned my phone up and down and played it like I was climbing. See, I’m a big kid.

The best part of the game, for me, was the scoreboard. If you’ve read my past reviews you know that I love the global scoreboards. Steppin’ gives us this in spades! You not only see who has the best time on each level overall, but you also get to see who has the best score for the week… and the best score for the day.

When I started playing I wondered about the reply factor for this game, but this type of scoreboard gives me a reason to give this game a run every day just to see where I stack up. With five different levels it’s fun to see if your scores can stay up on the big board for a whole day or event the week.

The game does a good job with the graphics. The items could pop out at you a bit more, but when your job is to get past them as quickly as possible it’s not really needed. The same can be said for the sound in the game, which is also very passable

picture-3The only real problem I had with the game is that it seemed to have some “touch” issues with the controls. Again, you are supposed to place your finger on the object (lily pad, rock, etc.) and drag it down as if running. In this game, if you misstep, or even miss an object (you have to hit them all) you get penalized and your time goes up. But there were several times when I was pretty sure that I had hit what I was supposed to hit and the game still vibrated to tell me that I had missed something. This became very frustrating… I want a higher score!

You know, I’m still not sure how much I like the idea of turning my phone into a funny little treadmill for my fingers, but I can tell you that I like this game and feel like there’s a good chance I’m going to keep it on my device for a while. I know that I’ll test my fingers against the world from time to time, and I’m going to break it out at parties just to see how things go after the party as been going for a while, if you know what I mean…

Steppin’ is a fun game that somehow really makes you feel like you’re racing with your fingers – nice trick. And best of all, it will have you trying to beat not only your best time, but the world’s best time.

The Good

Scoreboard is one of the best I’ve seen
Has that “just one more time” feel to it
Great for parties

The Bad

Little bit of “touch” issues
Needs more levels

This game looks pretty cool, it’s strange, but the large amounts of levels and global high scores it might be a hit!

Hey, the squares with numbers look like a childhood game I used to play called zero point where child jump up the squares.

Remarkable resemblance! I did not expect it to appear in a iphone game.

    • Bob says:

It’s actually a hopscotch board. In the level you’ve got 99 squares that you have to touch. It’s one of the hardest levels.

  17. Charlie says:

i played only the lite version .. its really difficult .. but on german store its promoted from apple .. .

Wow, this review seems like this is a treadmill game worth talking about! I too never really was interested in them, but this game actually looks well made and there’s quite a lot of features. Seems pretty good!

    • Bob says:

Yeah… it’s more fun than I thought it wold be. Not bad for the price it’s at right now. The global scoreboard really helps make it.
