ToMaCow Review

What’s a poor farmer to do when alien’s invade the planet looking to steal your Tomacows? Well you do what any good farmer would do. Break out the tomato gun and let loose on some alien scum in attempt to drive off the invading hordes.

picture-214ToMacow is fun accelerometer or touch based arcade style game. The Objective is to protect your ToMaCows from an endless wave of alien invaders hell bent on stealing your ToMaCows for food. Hold on for as long as you can and try to get the top score on local and global leader board rankings.

The game defaults to accelerometer controls so if you would rather play via touch you must do this from the main menu as there is no way to change the game in progress. I found both control methods equal so it’s really a matter of preference.

Once the game begin you find yourself standing on a platform overlooking your four precious ToMaCows with your backpack on and an endless tomato gun strapped on. The aliens will begin to move the yellow target indicator circle by tilting the iPhone or iTouch device on each approaching alien.

You can shake the iDevice as well which will scatter the tomatoes around the screen in attempt to hit multiple aliens at once as well.

Speaking of aliens there are quite a few types of aliens with different strategies that you will need to defend against.  There are the little green cyclops aliens who will charge ahead in hopes of grabbing a ToMaCow and running off the screen with it, than there are red cyclops aliens who are slightly harder to kill who will get as close as possible and toss purple bombs at you causing you to become dizzy for a few precious seconds.

There are larger Orange Cyclops who are require more shots to stun, but once stunned you can drag them up and they will explode destroying nearby aliens. As you progress you will have to contend with various other types as well. Some will dig tunnels underground while others will fly at you or just suck anything in their way including your ToMaCows! The game does a good job of keeping you on your toes and there are also a few boss battles mixed in to add to the hectic gameplay as well.

picture-116As you play you can unlock additional power-ups. As you fight the aliens some of these will drop packages. To collect these target them as you would an alien and once collected they can be used. One of these is the tomato bomb which is located on the bottom left of your screen. When activated 5 additional farmers will appear and mass tomato casualties ensue.

You also have the ability to collect letters along the top. Once collected these are bonuses that will be added to your score.

Graphically the game is bright and colorful just like I like them its almost like playing a cartoon. The animations, music and sounds effects are a very nice and compliment the game.

On negative I can point out is that the game only has one stage. If would be nice if after a few minutes something would change. Maybe a cycling day and night scene would help.

Overall I enjoyed ToMaCow it doesn’t take itself serious and surprising has a lot of replay value. With the gloabl leader board that keeps calling me back ToMaCow is a fun game the entire family can enjoy for 5 minutes or and hour at a time!

The Good

Audio and video presentation.
Both control methods are good

The Bad

One endless daytime level
Could use more weapon variety
