Word Solitaire Review
There’s only so much “pick up and play” that you can do before you want a game that has a little more thought put into it. And when I’m looking for more challenge I usually go for word games or the occasional solitaire game.
And now, just like when someone eating chocolate ran into another person eating peanut butter creating the first Reeses’, two of my favorite tastes have come together and created something wonderful and unexpected.
“Word Solitaire” by Candywriter takes all of the strategy and card management of solitaire games like Klondike and Freecell and ads a word creation game into the mix. The result is a sometimes maddening, but always fun and challenging, app that will keep you busy for hours and hours.
Each card has a letter on it and your job is to stack the cards (solitaire style) to form words. As long as the game can recognize that a word still has a chance to be formed, you can add the letters. For instance, adding an “I” to “sol” will keep the stack alive because it still has a chance for a word. But the game will not let you put letters in a stack that can’t form words.
Basically just like you can’t put an 8 on a 4 in regular solitaire.
This keeps you on your toes because sometimes you need to move letters around to form bigger words, but you can’t because there’s no safe place to move letters.
Just like normal solitaire games there are cards that you need to free up so that you can turn them over and reveal the letters. And you’ve got a deck of cards that you can flip over to use in your words.
To win the game you have to use all of your cards. Points are awarded for the words you create; The longer the words the higher the score. You also lose points when you have to restart your deck, so more management is needed.
The look of the game is very nice. The cards are easy to read and you can even pick the colors that you like best. The background for the game is made up of famous pieces of art, so that will make you look even more well rounded as you play.
And, just as you’d expect, the controls are very simple as well. The touch screen comes into play as a little finger work will put the cards where you need them. I liked how when you moved cards the letters you were moving could be seen above the stack you were moving. This was important since it’s always best to make sure that you have the right cards when you move them.
I had this game years ago on some long forgotten mobile device and had forgotten all about it until I saw this hit the app store. I couldn’t believe my eyes… And to make it even better there is a Lite version available for you to give it a little test run.
Word Solitaire is the perfect game for lovers of either card games or word games. And it somehow is even beyond perfect for people who like both. Reeses’ Peanut Butter Cups finally has a little competition in the “two great taste that taste great together” category.
