Supermarket Mania Review

Supermarket Mania Review

I have never been the biggest fan of time management games, but with the recent outbreak of them on the iPhone, I have started to play and enjoy a few of them. With that said, it’s games like Supermarket Mania that can both frustrate you because they can become so frantic, as well as be a lot of fun because they are – well, fun!

In Supermarket Mania, you will need to manage five different stores across fifty different levels of increasing difficulty. There are more than a dozen different types of products, seven types of customers with varying traits (Different walking speeds, time it takes for them to become angry), and various upgrades that you can buy with you hard earned cash.

For anyone that does not know what a time management game (or “dash” game) is, let me explain Supermarket Mania for you. You play the role of Nikki, a young girl running some grocery stores. During hours, various types of customers with come through and purchase items. It is your job to make sure that the shelves stay full of items and that the floors stay clean.

Towards426794_4 the back of the screen you will find the storage room, which you will need to visit in order to refill your cart, which is then used to restock the shelves. Restocking the cart is done by tapping the storage room, and restocking a shelf is done by tapping the shelf you would like to restock. In addition, in the lower right corner there is a meter showing how many items are left in your basket.

When there is no more of a certain item (you haven’t refilled it yet), and a customer is next to it wanting to buy some, a face will pop up above their head. This face will at first be green, and happy, but will eventually turn to red to indicate that the customer is furious.

Surrounding the face will be a meter which will slowly or quickly fill up depending on the customer. When that meter fills up, they will throw their bag down in disgust, and leave the store. You then need to pick up the garbage, and throw it in the trash (you can hold multiple bags at once).

At the beginning of a level, you are given a target goal. If you do not reach this, you will not pass the level. There is also an expert goal, which I presume gives you a bonus if you reach it (I haven’t been able to get it!). It will also display the different types of customers visiting the store, and the number of teenagers and thieves in the particular level.

That brings me to my next point – the game is full of diversity. For example, in some levels you will need to stop teenagers from throwing trash around. In others you will need to catch thieves attempting to steal your merchandise.

You can426794 also buy upgrades to help you progress, like a coffee maker that will make Nikki move faster. There is also more expensive food, guards, security cameras, and a better storage room, among many other things.

The graphics in Supermarket Mania are fantastic. They are colorful, vivid, crisp, and the frame rate still manages to stay at a very high level. The music is exciting and fits the ‘dash’ game genre well, and the sound effects add some nice touches.

One thing that really deserves to be mentioned about Supermarket Mania is that the whole game and interface just screams polish. The menus are well done, it’s easy to look at, and the overall package has high production values.

Another thing to note about Supermarket mania is that it isn’t a hardcore time management game. If you are a time management junkie, you’d best look elsewhere, because this game may not prove to be much of a challenge for you. However, for someone like me, the difficulty level is perfect, because I’m only a casual gamer.

The only real thing I can complain about is the fact that the leaderboards are only local. Other than that, the game is really good.

Overall, I found Supermarket Mania to be a lot of fun, because it pretty much says ‘casual gaming’ and ‘polish’ all over it. It is fun, addictive, and I know I’ll come back to it again, at least until I get stumped on a level or if I beat the game. Supermarket Mania is dirt cheap, addictive, and fun – what more could you ask for? I’m a fan.

The Good

- Great graphics

- Super addictive, easy to play

- Polish. ‘Nuff said!

The Bad

- Difficulty level may be too low for those ‘hardcore gamers’

- No global leaderboards

Addict+ Review

Addict+ Review

When a developer tries to make a puzzle game, very rarely is it a game that is truly fun and unique.

With that said, the developer of Addict+ has indeed created a unique game that is both challenging and fun.

The idea in Addict+ is to select two numbers from a 5×5 grid that add up to the number in the middle. The number in the middle can be pretty much any number (I haven’t seen it over forty, though), and the surrounding numbers will be any 24 numbers that can be paired up evenly (none left over) to equal the middle number.

The game is essentially a mix of a puzzle game and simple addition, and while the gameplay is simple it is fun and unique. I can definitely see myself coming back to Addict+, even if it doesn’t necessarily have the deepest gameplay.

The game also has a time limit required to complete the level. It starts at sixty seconds, but when it reaches below ten seconds, you can earn additional time by making pairs. This is nice because it gives you a chance to get back into the game when you are about to lose. In the options it would be nice to have an option to set the time limit to whatever you would like, or even a practice mode with no time limit.

addict11With a game like this, it’s all about the options. You need to be able to tweak the difficulty of the game to your liking. Some games simply present the game as is and allow for no customization. Thankfully this is not the case with Addict+.

There is a difficulty slider in the options with a small brain on one side and a large brain on the other. As you can probably guess, sliding to the larger brain makes the game more difficult. The time limit remains sixty second,

The graphics in the game are very nice and colorful, and you can set your own background in the options menu. Maybe we could even set our own card backgrounds in an update? Or the developer could add a few more preset backgrounds and card themes.

The sound in the game is interesting. The background music is nice, and subtle enough that I actually didn’t turn it off. The sound effects when choosing a card however were in my opinion much too loud. These can be turned off in the options (As well as the background music) if you’d like, which is what I did. The sound effects should definitely be turned down in an update.

As far as suggestions go, I do have a few. The first ofaddict1 those is a request for a more diverse game. For example, why not add in (no pun intended) a mode for subtraction, multiplication, or even division for those real math whizzes? I think that this would greatly increase the replay ability of the game, as well as give the developer a chance to increase the price.

Another suggestion I have is to incorporate different grid sizes. Obviously we wouldn’t be seeing anything like 20×20 due to a lack of screen space, but something along the lines of 7×7 or 8×8 with additional time to complete the level would be great. However; f the size of the grid increases, the time limit should too.

Overall, I liked Addict+ a lot and although it is simplistic, it is strangely addictive. It’s a great way to train your brain and still have a lot of fun. Without changing the difficulty slider it was originally pretty easy, but once I changed that it became more of a challenge. Anyone interested in the game should at least give the lite version a try, which features four levels of the full game.

The Good

- Great way to challenge your brain

- As the title of the game suggests, the game is very addictive
- Good mixture of puzzle and brain game genres

The Bad

- Sound effects too loud
- Only one size grid
- Lacks some options that would be nice to have in the game

I’ve always been a fan of Texas Hold ‘em games, and I have quite a few of them on my device. It is interesting to see how Rounders stacks up to the rest of them.

Jump Review

Jump Review

I have always been a fan of puzzle and action games, and Jump is one of those few games that manage to combine the two very well.

In Jump, you guide your ball (Which is a basketball) through various levels with various obstacles. The game screen will automatically move upwards slowly, so it is your job to guide your ball through the level while avoiding the various gaps.

dfhTo control your ever bouncing ball, you simply need to tilt your iDevice in the direction you’d like the ball to travel to. You need to be careful though, because one misstep (misbounce?) and you could find yourself falling through a gap. The physics feel very realistic, and the controls work really well. The tilt controls are extremely well done.

Jump features a wide variety of levels across three difficulty modes: easy, medium, and hard. Some of the obstacles include glass boxes (which break when you bounce on them), checkpoints, moving boxes, and boxes that give you power-ups such as a long jump or a short jump.

There are also boxes with varying numbers on them. Some act as point bonuses and some act as negative points. The point bonuses can be useful for obtaining a high score.

The graphics and level designs in Jump feel very polished and well done. The animations are fluid, the frame rate is without slowdowns, and the graphics are smooth around the edges (not pixilated). I was surprised at how well the game-play and graphics worked together.

In the bottom left corner you have a pause button, and in the bottom right corner you have an options button. However, the options button is essentially just a second pause button; because the only “options” are to either exit or return to the game. I found this very odd. Your point score is in the top left corner, and your remaining lives are in the top right corner. The layout is simple, and works well.

One thing I really liked about the graphics was how colorful they are. The colors are vivid and they make the game very enjoyable to look at while playing.

wakaThe only real annoyance I came across when playing this game was the menu screens. After pressing each and every button, you have to wait and watch while the buttons shake for a second or two before tapping the next button.

The audio in Jump is nothing more than some simple ‘boing’ noises and some more sounds along those lines. Simple, but gets the job done. Some music would be a very nice touch in a future update.

Jump does include high scores; however they are not global (only local). I would like to see the addition of global high scores in an update.

As far as options go, the game allows you to switch difficulty levels, adjust tilt sensitivity, and calibrate the game. You can also turns the sound effects on and off.

Overall, Jump is a fun game and I would recommend it to anyone interested in its concept. It has high production values, and feels very polished overall. Something about the game keeps me coming back for more.

The Good
——————–

- Great graphics
- Very additive
- Smooth frame rate

The Bad
——————–

- No music
- Annoying menus
- No global high scores

Wooden Labyrinth 3D Review

Wooden Labyrinth 3D Review

Tilt, turn, and jump to avoid the holes and get to the finish in Wooden Labyrinth 3D, a new twist on the classic game of Labyrinth.

While there may be a lot of labyrinth type games in the app store, not a single one has been as different and unique as Wooden Labyrinth 3D. In Wooden Labyrinth 3D, it is basically the same game of labyrinth; however it has quite a few new features that the others lack.

1For example, as the title suggest; the game is fully in 3D. It makes this game the only one of its kind, and helps make it stand out from the horde of labyrinth games in the app store. This 3D view also adds a whole new aspect to the gameplay, because with the 3D view also comes jumping.

In certain levels, jumping will be needed to move past various blocks and obstacles. To jump, you need to swiftly shake your iDevice up and down. I, however, found this slightly tedious, and would much rather have an actual on screen jump button. After playing with the game though, I realized that by tapping the back of the device you can make the ball jump much easier.

The graphics in Wooden Labyrinth 3D are nothing spectacular (plain wood and ball), but get the job done and allow the game to have no slowdowns whatsoever. I for one would much rather plain no frills graphics with a smooth frame rate over some fancy overdone game that has major performance issues.

One of the really cool parts about Wooden Labyrinth 3D is the fact that it is so highly customizable. You can change tilt sensitivity, calibrate the game, and even change the amount of friction (Whether the ball can stop on a dime, or if it actually follows the laws of physics, which requires much more skill) on the table. You can tune the game to whatever difficulty you’d like – whether you’re a beginner or a pro!

The audio in the game consists of simple ball on wood noises, as well as some relaxing and subtle in game music.

2One thing that I thought was extremely unique about the game was that all of the menus and level select screens play like a level. For example, on the main screen, the buttons are all wooden blocks, and you can roll the marble around as if it were a level. I thought this was an enormously creative addition to the game.

Wooden Labyrinth 3D also has a level editor which is scheduled for a release on a nearby date (hopefully). This really is the only thing that the game lacks, because past the initial 100 levels there is much replay ability.

The developer plans to add additional level packs as well, which would be a nice touch to compliment the level editor.

The game does manage to add some replay ability with the fact that each level has a ‘par’ time for completing it. I can see myself playing levels again and again until I beat the par time.

Overall, Wooden Labyrinth 3D is a great game that can both replicate the original version and play much more casually, for gamers such as myself that aren’t experts when it comes to skill and precision. It’s soon to be released level editor, as well as more levels on the way makes this game a great buy in my opinion. Anyone interested in a labyrinth type game should give Wooden Labyrinth 3D a look.

The Good
———-

- Great gameplay

- Very unique

- Level editor in the works

The Bad
———-

- Not much replay ability

- Not as many levels as some of its competitors
