FitClick Diet & Workout Tracker: A Decent Weight Loss App

FitClick Diet & Workout Tracker: A Decent Weight Loss App

Now reviewing weight loss apps definitely isn’t my usual style, but let’s just jump right in anyway. This app is basically a mobile interface of the popular FitClick.com website. It does its job pretty well, but I think its price tag is a little steep for what it offers.

This app is much more streamlined than the actual FitClick website, which has way more features than the app itself, like recipes, forums and other things. This app only offers a Calorie Balance, Diet Tracker, Workout Tracker and Exercise Demonstrations. It’s a nice variety of features, but not enough to warrant a four dollar price.

The Calorie Balance category lets you choose your target amount of calories for the day, so you can plan your meals out accordingly. Diet Tracker lets you choose the meals you ate for the day so you can count the calories you’ve eaten, and Workout Tracker lets you select workouts you’ve done for the day so you can track the calories you’ve burnt.

Exercise Demonstrations is a compilation of about 800 exercises of different regions of the body with instructions on how to do them. It’s a simple mobile design that’s made to be easy for anyone to use on the go.

This app has a nice, user friendly interface that offers a lot of weight loss help, but it’s still flawed. The whole weight loss system itself seems to be based solely on calories, which isn’t necessarily the most effective way of losing weight. Plus, even though it’s a little more inconvenient, it’s still way cheaper and more feature filled to just access the main website through your iDevice.

Overall, I just don’t see how these features are worth four dollars. I’ve never had to use any weight loss programs, I’m blessed with good genes, so I’m not exactly sure what a great weight loss program looks like, but I know that simply counting calories isn’t always the best way to lose weight.

Plus, the app is very watered down compared to the actual website. If you just want something simple to track what you’ve been eating and what you’ve been doing for exercise, this could be a really good app for you, but I just would expect some more features for four dollars. If I was interested in a weight loss program like this one I would probably only pay two dollars max for this; it’s simply too watered down and too expensive.

GoodReader: Giving the iPhone leverage in the battle for Corporate Dominance.

GoodReader: Giving the iPhone leverage in the battle for Corporate Dominance.

There are a lot of apps available that turn your iPhone into a thumb drive, an FTP server, or a document viewer. Most do not leverage the iPhone’s capabilities as well and efficiently as GoodReader can.

Much like every other thumb drive app available, GoodReader allows you to mount your iPhone as a network drive as long as you’re on the same WiFi network. The process is simple and quick. If you’re not familiar with how to accomplish this, the app has a very detailed how-to guide and FAQ built in. The usual file types like .doc, .xls, .pdf, are handled effortlessly. It will also handle audio and hi res images just as easily.

Where the app really excels, is its ability to connect to other sources such as email accounts, webDAV servers, and download from the web. This was something that stuck out in my eyes when browsing the apps features. These add-ons are available as an in-app purchase, which I was not a fan of. Especially since it really makes the app much more functional. I would rather pay a higher price and just get all the functionality up front. Games are a different story.

Now with some extra work (since I didn’t want to pay for email connectivity), I was able to test out one of the most troubling elements of my job. By the way, I work in IT and if you use Symantec Endpoint Protection for your security needs, then you will completely see the value in what I am about to say. I saved an alert that was sent to my corporate email to my desktop, the sent the file to my mounted iPhone. The alerts from Symantec are in .mht format, a proprietary archive format that houses text and images in a single file. This format is not viewable on a Blackberry, and I was not able to find any third party apps that can view this file type. You can’t rename it and try to view it some other way on the device. Why am I going on and on about this? This is a serious flaw in Symantec’s thought process. Think about it, 98% of all corporations use what type of cellular email device? A Blackberry. Why they chose this file output format is beyond me.

Back to my point, GoodReader completely fixes this. If you setup your email account with the in-app purchase add-on, then when you get an alert about an Outbreak infection, you can simply open GoodReader, download the file, and immediately get to work on isolating the threat. That is HUGE, especially in a world where corporations are hesitant to adopt the iPhone. This will give you some leverage if you want to sway them!

Another standout feature is the ability to dynamically wrap text when scaling the view of a PDF file. This makes reading much more convenient since you will not need to scroll left and right to read a line of text. This increase productivity in my eyes, which gives this app extra value in my everyday operations.

GoodReader sports a super clean interface with full Landscape support. This really comes in hand when referring to a document while using a third party stand, such as the one that came with my Incase shield. When viewing a document, you can dismiss and recall the function buttons by tapping the center of the screen much like when viewing your camera roll.

At its initial price, GoodReader is pretty good. The add-on features, if built-in with a higher price tag, would really push this app over the threshold. It can stand its ground against the competition easily as is, and the extra functionality is there if you need it.

The developer has contacted us and informed us that the latest GoodReader update (2.6). makes GoodReader no longer just a “viewer” app — it now offers the ability to edit TXT files! And it also offers import/export of pictures to/from the iPhone’s Photo Album.

ArtStudio: A Professional Design Studio For Those On The Go

There are two things in this world I have always wanted to do, one is to learn to play the guitar and the second being a professional artist. So far I’ve been unable to achieve either due to my pathetic lack of drive and daily life getting in my way. However today may be the day I embark on solving one of these with the release of ArtStudio by Sylwster Los.

Wobble: Shake what your mother gave ya

Wobble: Shake what your mother gave ya

Lets all be honest here. Regardless of the technology there is always a “dirty” side to technology in fact it’s pretty easy to say that the “underbelly” of society can actually drive a product from the brink of death such as the story of when VHS was in a fight for it’s life with Betamax. Sony refused adult content whereas VHS opened it’s doors to adult content which exploded the sales of VHS and the rest is history.

Today that new frontier is the appstore, and like it or not a hefty percentage of the install base is into adult oriented materials, and since this is America if there is a dollar to be made well than “There is an app for that.”

Enter Wobble! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to explain what you can do with this application allows you to do. I will touch on it, but that I want to take the conversation down a differnt path and explain some family friendly things this application can do.

Wobble allows you to take any image you currently have stored on your iPhone re-size and scale it and add a scalable wobble effect to any selected region of the picture.  You also have the ability to adjust the wobbles effect and duration using the included tools.

Once you have created your masterpiece you can save the file to be played back at a later date. or share it using the hotwobble.com website which is built into the application.  The Application does have a few drawbacks thought. In the current version there is a limitation of 6 Wobbles that can be applied to one image. This isn’t really a concern for most parts but I thought I would mention it in case you have multiple bounces that are needed.

It also would have been nice to included a built in camera so you could capture, create, and share all while in the application instead of having to close the app to take a picture, and re-open the application. Trivial for some but once again im simply pointing out things.

Now besides placing these wobbles on women and starring at your iPhone for hours thinking about what you would do to the picture in a real life situation there are plenty of family friendly things you can do with the application as well. In fact I would use the app for this more than the aforementioned purposes myself.

For example I have a friend lets call him Johnny who always no matter question you ask him has this nervous tick where he shakes his head slightly left and down before answering. So I took his image and added a wobble effect to his face zoomed in, and whenever he’s not around or even around I pull out the app and ask him a question. It beings a laugh to all our friends having Johnny around all the time!

Your ability to be creative is the only limitation to the longevity of of using wobble.  The application  may be built with ogling in mind, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is plenty of good clean and dirty fun to be had with Wobble.

Wobble comes in a lite .99 version and a full blown premium version. This review was based on the full premium version of the application which has all premium features.

The application costs $1.99 currently which honestly the biggest deterrent to most consumers seeing as the application has a limited scope of function. However the developer is promising some huge additions and features to those who purchase the premium edition as opposed to the lite version.

AutoRingtone Pro: A unquie way to customize your ringtones

AutoRingtone Pro: A unquie way to customize your ringtones

NoTieSoftware the developers of the wildly successful 100Sounds has released their follow-up application for the iPhone entitled AutoRingtone Pro and anyone who is looking for a way to make their ring tones unique should definitively  have a look!

AutoRingtone Pro in a nutshell is a audio mixer that combines both audio sound effects and text to speech into a format that can be easily added to your iPhone to be used as a customized ringtone. These ringtones are created on the iPhone and than converted into either .mp4 format or .aiff format (for use on other phones besides the iPhone) and downloaded via AutoRingtone Pro’s website.

auto1Once you download these files you simply import them into iTunes and sync them as ringtones to your iPhone it’s really easier than this sounds.. I can create a custom ringtone from my grandmother in less than 2 minutes from design to install.

Ok I hear you so what. I can create music and sound effect ring tones from songs easily from iTunes and while that’s partially true AutoRingtone Pro lets you “mix” it up..

When you start the application you will be presented with a straight forward interface.  Your asked for your email which will be used when you receive your ringtones (you will not be bombarded with spam it’s simple a “user account or password” to get your files)

The second box ask for the name you wish to be called like “Mr. G” etc, while the third box asks for the callers name. FOr example If you enter Glenn in the Name Box and Steve Jobs in the Caller’s field and created the file the next time Steve Jobs calls me my phone would speak Glenn Steve Jobs is calling.

What sets this application from the others is the amount of choices available for your customization.

The bottom half of the screen has 2 windows that contain well over 100 different sound effects and 20+ voices that can be combined to make an unlimited amount of custom ringtones.

The application has both an auto and manual ringtone mode. The Auto mode creates the ringtone as if your personal secretary was informing you about a call.  For Example:  Intro sound effects than Glenn Steve Jobs is callings, Please answer the phone.

auto2In Manual mode only what you type in is spoken. The application does not add anything at all. So you can really make a unique ringtone. Example: Hey Glenn you sexy beast it’s Gisele Bundchen calling and shes ready to leave that loser Tom Brady and date you!

You really have to play around with the sounds and text to understand just how creative you can get. The application is currently .99 and you are not limited to a certain number of creations like some other applications. With AutoRingtone Pro you can make unlimited ringtones for the life of the product.

One area I think that could, should be implemented is the ability for the user to “record” there own effects, and or voice overs and have them added to the ringtone. I think that would really set this application apart from any of the other similar applications on the appstore.

However I can say that I am 100% behind the developer and know he is listening and supporting all of his applications unlike some other developers who are looking to cash in and move on. It wouldn’t surprise me if in the next update there were 200 or 500 sounds instead of the 100+ currently.

It comes highly recommended to anyone looking to make some creative and different ringtones than the first 30 seconds of Green Day’s latest single. It’s dirt cheap and you would be helping support developers who are designing, and updating applications with you in mind first.

Mix.DJ: I Want My DJ Mix Now!

Mix.DJ: I Want My DJ Mix Now!

To show our versatility here at Appversity, we sometimes want to give you readers the occasional “Productivity” or “Entertainment” app just to keep things fresh.  In this case, we’ve reviewed mix.dj, a music genre app where you can listen to and discover thousands of new DJ’s and mixes worldwide with just one click anytime of the day.  If that sparks your interest I highly advise you take a look see at the following review to see if mix.DJ should make it’s way onto your handheld device.  Let’s get down and boogie and see what this app is all about.

Features:
Upon opening the app, you are introduced to the “Moods” library where you can pick individual tracks to listen or add to your favorites list.  The 16 moods vary from Disco Gold Party to Psy-trance Party mix, or even Sunday morning relaxation music to Funky House Party, the variety truly is astonishing.

Screen shot 2009-11-17 at 12.55.13 PMOnce you’ve selected the category you wish to listen to, there are hundreds of music tracks to choose from and you have the choice of either just listening to the beat, or you can add it to your favorites list.  Be careful though, the “Add to Favorites” is actually in another language and says “Ajouter aux favoris” but they may have fixed that type error.  Each track comes with album art and the artist.

However, the main drawback of the game is that the tracks sound too similar.  And a person unfamiliar with the slightest differences between Trance and Techno will be absolutely lost in this app.  When I listened to tracks in Electro Party and then switched over to Trance Party, I could hardly tell the difference.  It all sounded the same to me, but maybe that has more to say about me rather than the app.  I don’t listen to techno very much at all so the app is lost on me.  This will be true to most buyers out there who aren’t up to date with the newest of DJ mixes.

But techno really gets your blood flowing and is the music you groove to, than this app could be very useful to you merely because of the amount of music packed into this one little app.  mix.DJ is a miniscule 0.8 megabyte but it relies heavily on internet connection for it’s music library.  It’ll last you quite a while and all the tracks are very lengthy but can be repetitive but techno music sort of is already so that might not hinder one’s experience as much as it did for me.

What We Liked:
+ More than 10,000 DJ mixes at your fingertips  + 66 selected genres and subgenres  + Feature of uploading your own DJ mix via internet  + 16 easy moods  + Superb sound quality  + Unique concept  + Search artists, tracks, keyword feature

What We Disliked:
- Some text is not translated into English (i.e: “Add to favorites”)  – Not enough variety when it come to artists  – Well known or main stream artists absent  – Many of the tracks sound too similar  – Not enough variation
from mix to mix  – Internet connection essential for playing music

Final Verdict:
With the upcoming arrival of platform game, DJ Hero, being aired on national television several days a week, you could see the appeal here.  The idea behind mix.dj isn’t all bad.  Scrolling through countless tracks adding them to one customized compilation and listening at your own leisure sounds like a very novel idea.  However, the concept isn’t flawed, the actual music tracks are.  Too many tracks sound exactly the same, even the “Relax” category still sounded like I was two glowsticks short of a full on rave party.  The game has value to techno lovers because of the thousands of tracks that are available and the sound quality is top notch.  Having endless amount of mixes being uploaded into the game via internet connection is spiffy too and could be crucial if the right music tracks are integrated in to the game, but for now I can only slightly recommend to the hardcore techno lovers.

However I wish the service fee was 4.99 a month it would make this a NO Brainer for anyone looking for True GPS navigation but for 30 days it’s definitely worth checking out. Just don’t forget to cancel via phone should you not want to continue the service.

As a kid I promised Brooks Robinson that I’d name a son after him (I did). I’m even looking at my “10 Year Old All Stars” trophy as I write this.
