yes you can do that, but in both cases you lose something. There is a way to have each article that posts on the portal create a thread in the forums I believe. This would allow the portal to be used for comments and the forums and one universal login across the site, but there are other issues with that.

I need to look into it more.

Also at least please read the portal and try to comment. It makes the site look more active and encourages others to comment as well.
