Kids Vs. Zombies

Okay… Okay… Everyone who has hung out at this site for a while knows that I love just about anything “Zombie”. Perhaps that makes me a little bit unbiased when it comes to reviewing games in this genre, but I think it makes me pay more attention to them. I’ve played so many of these games that it takes something a little bit “more” to make me really sit up and take notice.

picture-613You remember the plot (and the tank) for Zombie Pub Crawl? Yep, that got my interest. So here comes another cool plot for “Kids Vs. Zombies”… A zombie plague breaks out and three kids take refuge in their fort where they have to hold off the relentless horde night after night. Throw in a bunch of cool, upgradable weapons and some cool “boss” zombies and you’ve got me sitting up straight.

“KVZ” is a very fun and addictive game. The fact that it involves zombies only adds to the pleasure for me, but it’s a fun game for anyone who likes fun shoot ‘em ups.

You play three different kids in this game, each with their own ability. Scarlett is the long range fighter, using slingshots and the like. Dexter is the explosive expert using cherry bombs to start. And Marcus is your “up close” guy with some sort of machine gun as his starting weapon. Yes, this does seem to be something out of the “kids next door” cartoon, but this game is better than that.

Your view is from behind the kids and you can touch whichever character you need. The firing controls are easy to use and you’ll have no problems getting an aim on the undead. The game uses the touch screen well and that’s pretty important in any iDevice game. You can also tilt the phone up and down to change your view up. This also works nice.

You’ll fight your way through over forty levels (or nights) as the kids take on several different types of zombies. There are also some boss zombies to make things rough on the kiddies. And if that’s not enough, there are four difficulty levels to play through.

Every time the zombies get to your base they damage it. Get down to zero damage and… well you know what happens at then. Good thing you can upgrade at the hardware store after each round and fix up your fort. You can also upgrade your weapons, your spotlights, how your teammates do, and other things to make your chances of becoming a teenager a little easier.

Graphically is about the only place where the game isn’t fully top-notch. The graphics are fine, just a little sub-par and not as sharp as they could be. But don’t worry, you can still make out all of the zombies and you’ll feel a nice satisfaction when you take them down.

picture-77About the only thing I can think of after playing through this for a while (aside from wanting to get back to it so I can finish it) is that I would love to have seen some other “survivors” that the kids could save. It would be fun to see them coming toward you and having to decide if it’s another kid or a zombie coming your way. That would give you a cool feeling of accomplishment.

Oh, and speaking of that… some accomplishments would be great. There are several things that could be in that section. Going through a level without a miss, killing all the zombies with only one kid (maybe an accomplishment for each kid), letting each of the zombies get within a certain range before killing them… there are different things that could easily make up accomplishments.

In the end, Kids Vs. Zombies is a very addictive game. It’s actually one that kids will enjoy playing as much as adults. I, obviously, have several zombie games on my phone and, for now, this is the one I fire up not only when I’m in the mood to kill zombies, but also when I just want to play something fun.

A friend recommended this to me, so I downloaded it last week. I have been playing non-stop! This game is an absolute riot. It replaced Field Runners as my preferred time-killer on airplane rides. I found the initial training mini-level to be very useful since the aiming and shooting needs a little explanation. I’m hoping for more zombie-variety and maybe another character in the near future.

Yeah… the drop to $1.99 makes this game even better. I had a long boring meeting yesterday and ended up playing the game through most of it.

This game is great! I’ve put hours into this game already. It’s really fun. I definitely recommend it. Good thought on accomplishments, Bob. I love the accuracy % at the end of each level, it would be great to have more.

    • Bob says:

Yeah… I should have mentioned that in the review. Good Call!

At the end of each level you not only get the accuracy, but also how many zombies where killed and how many of them were by you.

This game really is a fun little shooter!
