Ace Hunter: White Tail Hunt Review
I’ll start off by saying that I’m not into hunting animals. It’s not that I’m some activist or something. It’s just that if I’m going to shoot something it had better be in self defense or a zombie… I’d shoot zombies even if they weren’t attacking me. Seriously… I’d shoot zombies just for fun.
But I do have several friends who hunt and I can understand the allure of going one on one with nature. And I can see why games like Ace Hunter do quite well, so I was happy to get my finger on the trigger of this new game.
My first pleasant surprise was that the game was developed by Coresoft and I’ve had a good time playing “Super Sniper” by them (I don’t mind shooting at things that shoot back). So now I was a little more pumped to go after Bambi’s Mother.
Graphically the game looks very nice. You’ve got a realistic view of the forest you’re hunting in and the deer look pretty much like… well… deer. Though it’s odd to see that you’re on a dirt road in the forest so the effect is that you’re sitting in the back of your pick up waiting for the deer to come along. Which may be the proper way to hunt, what do I know.
Sadly, that’s the only view you’re ever going to see. This game needs an update quick so that you can get a different view. The same is actually true for the deer. You’ve got two types of deer; the ones that walk and are easy to shoot or the ones that hope around and are impossible.
The controls are also a little hit and miss. I’ve zeroed in on perfect kills several times only to have the deer hop away like I wasn’t even close. And once that happens you’ve got about ten seconds of frightened deer jumping around like it’s the ballet. All you can do is sit and wait for them to calm down and try again.
This is frustrating because you only have a certain amount of time to bag your deer to get to the next level (which is exactly like the previous, only now you have to kill more deer).
The sound is pretty good on the gun shot, but I have to laugh every time a shell casing is sent out and I hear it rattling on a hard floor. Who knows, maybe that’s the sound of a spent shell hitting a truck bed. But one thing is for sure… you’re not standing in a grassy meadow.
Replay factor is a bit light as well. There’s nothing to unlock and the scoreboard only shows the high score in each level. They could have at least put a top ten hunters type of thing.
Though there are different difficulty levels (Beginner, Seasoned, and Ace Hunter) they are pretty much the same. All you really have is more kills that you have to make in the minute you have.
So all in all, not a great game at the moment. But I will say that for a dollar it’s not bad… Crap, I just realized that I could’ve made a joke about it being worth a “Buck”. Oh well, it probably wouldn’t have been funny anyway.
This game needs an update to make it really stand out. Coresoft should go out and shoot a couple of new backgrounds, that would help. And how about some other animals? It’s always cool in shooting games when you aren’t supposed to shoot the hostages, right? Put some animals that we’re not supposed to kill, mix it up a little. And get rid of that shell casing sound effect. Sure it made me laugh for a while, but now it’s just embarrassing.
Or how about a trophy room to put the heads of your best kills? At least give us a “top hunters” type of scoreboard.
Oh, and a different weapon that you could unlock would really be nice. I’d like to see a flamethrower. Then you could kill a deer and cook it right then and there.
Lastly… make the deers all “undead deers”. If they were zombie deers I’d shoot them all day long!
The Good
Game looks nice and give you the feeling of a hunt
Price is niceThe Bad
Game doesn’t do anything new so it get’s boring
Shell casing sound effect – funny at first, sad later
