iPhone’s BEST Top Down Shooters: Agree or Disagree?

iPhone’s BEST Top Down Shooters: Agree or Disagree?

Many of you who have iPhones and are fans of the old top-down shooters will be eagerly awaiting an iPhone version of the classic Raiden franchise. While we wait, there are a few shooters in the App Store that are on the right path. Which one is thScreen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.05.25 AMe best for your buck? Lets take a look.

First up we have Sky Force & Sky Force Reloaded by Infinite Dreams Inc for $2.49. The length of the campaign is almost double that of other shooters in the App Store and the addition of picking up civilians gives it a little more edge. This game was one of the best mobile shooters in the past however its origins are obvious on the iPhone’s much higher resolution display. The sound effects are closer to that of an Atari 2600, falling short on trying to impress us with arcade-like audio. Gameplay is relatively boring and power-ups are dull.

Next we have iFighter by EpicForce and SkySmash 1918 by Richard Screen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.02.56 AMWilson. Both have short campaigns however the presentation in these titles is outstanding with exceptional 2D graphics and sound effects particularly in SkySmash. iFighter has got more variety in enemy types and boss battles. Both lack in power-ups compared to the over the top selection found in Raiden (probably due to the World War setting.) If Capcoms 1942 is more up your alley you have to try out both of these games. For all their merits the short campaign and no multiplayer make them feel incomplete.

Screen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.03.11 AMFinally there is Gameloft’s Siberian Strike. Though I’m slightly disappointed in the 3D visuals, here is a shooter that finally contains a decent length in its campaign with a well scripted storyline that is actually funny. Combine this with multiplayer over Wi-Fi, decent power-ups, excellent audio and special levels that switch to a 3D third person perspective, Siberian Strike definitely feels complete. Not as nostalgic as iFighter or SkySmash, Siberian Strike is definitely the closest we can get to Raiden until (or if ever) iScreen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.03.25 AMt’s released.

An honorable mention goes to iBomber by Cobra Mobile ($3.99).  This shooter will have you dropping bombs on your enemies relying on precision timing rather than the traditional “shoot everything” Raiden-style game.  Although gamers main complaint was the controls, it’s definitely worth checking out at least the Lite version.  Screenshots look great and reviews are positive. May be worth a look.

iPhone 3GS vs. Motorola DROID

iPhone 3GS vs. Motorola DROID

I don’t have to tell you that iPhone is an epidemic, seemingly everyone and their mother and father have either an iPhone or some sort of Apple touch device.  But as a company titan such as Apple may seem invincible and on top of the world, one simple ripple can cause a tsunami.  Can Motorola Droid be that small ripple to turn the tide? 430187_1_hs

Apple’s ubiquitous device has given the mobile phone market’s old guard something to think about, and many manufacturers – Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, to name but three – have flocked to Google’s banner, or more specifically its much-hyped Android operating system.

Motorola’s Droid is possibly the most high-profile Android device yet, with more dollars than you could possibly dream of being expended to ensure that everyone in the US is fully aware of its presence.  It’s not only here to rival the iPhone, it’s here to revolutionize your handheld cellular device experience entirely.

But can this Motorla Droid do what seems like the impossible?  Can David take down Goliath?  Does the Droid have what it takes to bring down the incumbent iPhone 3GS or does it simply join the rapidly-increasing ranks of also-rans?  Only time will tell but here are some early reviews to get the debate started.

I really wasn’t ready for the end of summer right now.  Then I got a hold of Monster Kill from Itunes.  This great Halloween themed game will have you ready for pumpkin carving and costume parties in no time.  Find out in this review why this simple wall defense game does so well.

Interesting. Usually when you think of a game of War being played with cards you imagine two decks of cards and flipping one at a time, seeing who has the highest card. It’s a game we’ve all played and seems to always remain a classic.

Suddenly the App Store is filled to the brim with games like Fight Control.  Who would have ever thought that trying to keep track of different vehicles and get them to the right locations without crashing them would become the next big gaming genre?  Not me, that’s for sure.  But somehow it happened… and I’m a big fan.

Dark Raider is a top-down action adventure game from Rocking Pocket Games. This game is immediately comparable to iDracula with objectives, and while it doesn’t have the flashy graphics of the iPhone classic, it proves to be a good game.

Arcade Pool Online Review

Arcade Pool Online Review

I’m willing to use my imagination with a lot of iPhone games.  I’m willing to race, shoot, spin, dodge—but there’s something surreal, downright deconstructionist about taking the real things that we do and converting them into simulations for a platform that’s no bigger than your palm.

Blimp – The Flying Adventures Review

Blimp – The Flying Adventures Review

Don’t be fooled.  Despite its rather awkward name, “Blimp – The Flying Adventures,” this app soars high in multiple game genres.  This 2-d arcade-style game is all at once a taxi driver, bomber, and racer game.  And while it’s easy to pick-up and play, you’ll find it quickly consuming your free time.

blimp1This particular app, which appeared at the Worldwide Developers Conference, supposedly took a team of three Czech guys five months to develop, and their effort did not go in vain.  Craneballs Studios has a classic on their hands.

In Blimp you play the role of a veteran other-worldly blimp pilot who comes back into service with a fringe merchant group.  Your job: collect cargo, deliver people, and bomb the bejeezus out of aliens.  (Sound vaguely like Firefly yet?)  All the while racing the clock and trying not to damage your fragile sky bus.

While I’ll be the first to admit that this game and its controls take some getting used to, it’s well worth the journey.  The game requires you to tilt the iPhone to steer, tap (lightly and frequently) with your left thumb to accelerate upwards, and tap with your right thumb to drop bombs on enemy turrets, tanks, and blimps.

Also, dodge radiation gasses, air vents, and flames and take it easy on those landings because your health doesn’t last long.  Bear with the tutorial mission because the missions get easier after that—at least for a while—and soon you’ll find yourself dodging through levels 1-20 like the veteran pilot you supposedly are.

picture-210Besides the addictive and extensive nature of the game play, the soundtrack features eleven original tracks and the graphics are like something out of Dreamworks.

And while the storyline itself doesn’t win any Oscars, it’s nice to have some background on why exactly you’re flying this blimp around.

Perhaps my favorite parts of the game are the introductory story screens with sketches of pirate-looking bionic men.  Makes me think of Treasure Planet. Argh!

The game also includes a scoreboard where you can see exactly how many times you’ve died, how many passengers you’ve carried, how many levels you’ve completed, and other fun facts.  Sync this with your facebook account and see who’s the best Blimp pilot.

Best app of the month?  The year?  I won’t draw any hasty conclusions, but it’s certainly a must-have for serious iPhone gamers.

The Good:

Innovative and engrossing game
Fun sci-fi theme
Splendid graphics and sound

The Bad:

Controls difficult at first
Tutorial a little frustrating

In alien assault however, I get to be the alien…and boy is it fun!

Skyfart Review

Skyfart Review

Ever since I was a kid, I always dreamed about going to the moon. OK so my fear of height’s has gotten in the way of that little goal but now thanks to Skyfart I can manage to live a little of that dream.

picture-110OK let me get this out of the way real quick. i know the name of this application is Skyfart and yes it’s a flatulence game. Luckily Skyfart is not your simple run of the mill fart apps that seem to permeate the appstore daily. Don’t get me wrong I mean I’m not an old geezer or an uptight fellow at all. In Fact I enjoy a quick game of pull my finger with the kids now and again, and heck I’ve even played the old dutch oven game with misses once or twice. But to buy an app based around fart sounds alone seems ludicrous to me. However build a game around it and I’m there!

Skyfart follows the tradition of games like Flight, Monkey Bash, and countless other flash based games where you launch some poor character into the air and try to keep it in flight for as long as possible. Except in Skyfart you play the roll of lovable or should I say gassy Bill as he tries to reach the stars on his human exhaust system alone.

The control of this game are quite simple in fact it can be played with just one finger! That’s right everyone you know can play this game! Even old Jessie who’s blown off 9 fingers trying to invent the best batch of moonshine this side of he mountains.

You simply press Bill and he will let loose some flatulence that will propel him upwards. As bill descends the screen you will need to press him to keep him moving upwards. Each time you touch ol Bill he will let loose with one of ten different sounds that will put a little chuckle or smile on your face.

As Bill gets higher and higher he will speed up on his descents making it harder to press him in time. Luckily the developer has added a few perks to the game to help you out. First there is a small arrow that tells you where Bill currently is when he’s off scree so you can be prepared for his arrival.

Secondly the game has at least 2 power-ups that appear. The first is a heart. If Bill bounces into these they act as additional lives. So when Bill falls off the bottom of the iPhone or iTocuh screen he will get a last second jolt of gas and propel himself skywards once again. The second power up is an up arrow. When bill touches these he will be sprung upwards of 500 feet.

picture-32As you climb higher and higher you will enter the atmosphere and than outer space itself. The goal of the game is to go as high as possible and have name etched in the Skyfart hall of fame forever more! Currently appVersity.com is ranked first place in the Skyfart world! Sadly this is Skyfart world and not the real world, but hey beggars can’t be choose right?

Graphically the game is pretty plain. yes its colorful and the 3d sky animations are quite cute for a while, but don’t expect this to wow your friends into buying an iPhone!

Audio wise the game has a surprisingly decent soundtrack. The theme music used is a classical piano rendition which makes the game seem somewhat classier than it actually is.. Just don’t go playing it out loud in the doctors office as your likely to get some pretty strange stares.

overall the game is pretty fun. It’s something both big and small kids will love to play with for a few minutes here and there. I myself have a reputation to uphold. As the world’s most prolific Skyfarter I must hone my skills and perfect my craft. So excuse me while I crack open another can of chili beans for some practice..

The Good

Fun in short bursts :)
Nice classical music

The Bad

Forced registration on start
Not enough power ups.

Dungeon Defense Review

Dungeon Defense Review

I am a fan of Tower Defense games and Dungeon Defense by InMotion Software does not disappoint. At first I was thinking this was a Dungeons and Dragons kind of game until I fired this baby up.

I am not a fan of role playing games so I was very happy to see that this was a Tower Defense game instead. I was also very pleased to find out that this is different from the flood of TD games on the iTunes store.

picture-55The overall goal of the game is to prevent enemies from reaching the end of the path and draining all the energy from the Dungeon King, however this is where most TD games and this game take a different path.

There is no back-story at all, just a dungeon and a pathway and “X” markers where you place your evil skeleton guys.

After loading Dungeon Defense up you are presented with four options, start, resume, credits, and help. I choose the help file and found it to be extremely adequate at explaining how the game operates by showing a video of what each icon stands for and how to build up your skeleton army. After watching the help video I was ready to jump in and defend my Dungeon King.

The game starts with a dungeon with a pathway to the King. You will have 25 rounds where you must protect the King. There are green “x” markers for you to place you skeleton army guys. At the beginning of the game you are given 200 in gold to spend on your army, unfortunately the 200 gold is only enough for two skeleton swordsmen.

There are three different types of skeleton army guys you can create, swordsmen, an archer, and an axe man. After creating your skeleton’s you can upgrade them once you have gathered up enough gold coin from killing enemies. There are no towers in this game, only green X’s on the ground where you place your skeleton army.

The place that the skeleton is placed becomes its spawn point, when your skeleton is killed it will lay on the ground until time expires and then regenerate on the green “x”. If your skeleton survives the round it will still return to its spawn point and regain some much needed health while waiting for the next round of enemies.

Upgrading your skeletons is easy as a touch that brings up a small menu where you can upgrade, revive, or sell. Each unit can be upgraded 2 times and the final upgrade grants a special ability. The swordsmen gain a double damage attack, the archers shoot fire arrows that do splash damage and the axe men appear to go into a rage but not sure what that “rage” does?

Unlike most TD games the skeleton army guys do not change in appearance when upgraded, this is something I would hope the publisher’s change because in the heat of the battle, you cannot tell which skeletons need upgrades.

After getting into the game and the enemies start coming out of the woodwork the goal is apparent that you need to protect your King! The King picture-65is stationary however he can shoot once he is attacked. The King’s attack is not powerful at all and one should not rely on the King saving his own rear end!

The King also has two special upgrades; you can slow down the enemies or choose haste and speed up your skeleton army. Once the King is destroyed it is GAME OVER so make sure that you surround the King with some highly upgraded skeletons once you have the gold coin to do so.

The graphics in this game are pretty good overall. This is a top-down view game meaning you are looking down into the dungeon. The game does allow for you to pinch the screen to zoom in. The characters are pretty good looking as well, they have fluid movement, and when a skeleton is killed it will fall into a small crumpled pile of bones.

Overall I would say the game is pretty fun, the fact that it is a different take on TD games makes it interesting to play and adds some different types of strategy. I think that there are some upgrades that need to be done and from the look of the game’s description on the iTunes store the upgrades are on the way. The publisher has listed that they have submitted two additional levels to Apple for approval and that they are planning on adding a scoring system.

The Good

Different take on tower defense games
Good graphics
Fun characters that are different from most tower defense games

The Bad

Only one level right now more planed for future upgrades.
No scoring, but that is coming in a future upgrade
Skeletons do not show that they are upgraded.
