Sword and Poker Review: A Mismatch Made In Heaven

Peanut butter and jelly, sweet and sour chicken, pretzels and ice cream. These are just a few of the combination’s that on paper sound like they would be a complete disaster, but once they are experienced you will never be able to go back to one without the other.  The app-store has seen its fair share of  mix and matching of genre’s  as well, but I can not recall many applications that stick out in my mind as pure creative genius like the masterpiece developer GAIA has created for the iPhone and iTouch devices.

Guerrilla Bob: A dual sticked payback

Guerrilla Bob: A dual sticked payback

What would happen if you took Nintendo’s anti Mario hero Wario tossed in a few cheesy one liners, and replicated the gameplay from such classics as commando and ikaruga warriors? Whatever you answered your wrong. The answer is undeniably Guerrilla Bob.

Heavy Mach 2: Heavy Armored Tank Action Never Looked So Good

Heavy Mach 2: Heavy Armored Tank Action Never Looked So Good

Heavy Mach 2 is the sequel from the critically acclaimed, Heavy Mach that hit the App Store a while back.  There many differences between the two, the one major difference being that the newest rendition of Heavy Mach is a new overhead perspective with 3D combat units instead of the 2D side-scroller that was the original.

The objectives of Heavy Mach 2 are pretty straightforward.  Accept the mission in the command center of the base-camp.  Buy arms, parts, or special attacking items from the shop.  Install parts or bots in the maintenance shop.  Execute the mission, and engage into combat with enemies on the battlefield.  There are various enemies you will come into conflict with, mid-level bosses, some bosses even take up a good portion of the map.  There are hundreds of kinds of arms, parts, bots systems that can be bought for a price in the shop.

The above overhead view never felt or looked so sweet...

What takes gamers breath away upon first glance will be the astonishing visuals.  You may think the screenshots look sharper than the game actually runs on your handheld device but this isn’t so.  Heavy Mach 2 is a absolute looker, beautifully done in 3D visuals that strike even the hardest of critics.

There are an abundant of features that I liked about this game.  The controls at first puzzled me, but it was through no fault of the game, I was just a little slow.  The control scheme fits perfectly, both in maneuvering and the combat system.  It implements path-drawing mechanic very well, while the tap and double-tap movements allow for the gamer to decipher exactly where he or she wants to go and when.  There’s also a ton of customization for you to go absolutely mach-crazy over.  You can outfit your mach with different weapons, body parts and customizing your mach really brings the game to life.  It’s like import car racing games where you go into your garage and  soup up your ride in the flashiest of knick-knacks.  And the gameplay is rock-solid and entertaining for long periods of time thanks to the graphics and intense battle sequences.

Like to Customize? You've come to the right place..

However, what you find in reviewing games is that no game is perfect.  Heavy Mach 2 is loaded on excellent features but it also falls short in some areas.  What bothered me was that your mach has only a single pool of hit points.  Usually, in mach games like this, the attacks can strike and damage a specific part of the robot, bringing a whole different kind of strategy to the game.  This feature is not present in this app.  The difficulty is another gripe, because the hit-detection and collision detection is a bit faulty as projectiles and rockets seem just to past right through you unless they’re dead on.  Other minor gripes include lack of a storyline, and some issues with the clunky interface.

Despite it’s flaws, Heavy Mach 2 is a wonderfully made app that mach and Gundam lovers will fall in love with in an instant.  It is a bit pricey, the introductory price is half off at $2.99, but you won’t find a game that looks better than this.  There is a ton of customization for you to let loose your robotic wild side and launching highly volatile rockets and firing countless steel bullets at your armored machine nemesis’ couldn’t be more exhilarating.  I’m sure gamers would’ve loved a campaign mode with a storyline and a little more depth and variety with alternative mission types, but Heavy Mach 2 is a masterful slightly casual mech.-combat game with a dash of RPG elements that I highly recommend to all action adventure gamers.

Rafter: Like a Lone Scoop of Ice Cream, It’s Good but not Enough

Rafter: Like a Lone Scoop of Ice Cream, It’s Good but not Enough

I have major respect for those game developers that take on the challenge of creating a great physics puzzle game.  Think of all the education they’re using, computing different variables of weights and integrating the effects of gravity, or water, or movement.  It’s astounding.  Add EMANTRAS Inc. to the long list of people who I respect as they give the App Store another physics app in Rafter.

Physic-based challenges at your fingertips.

Rafter is 21 levels of pure challenge and excitement, as the game advertises.  The game’s goal is to stimulate your brain cells with challenges and puzzles that even the astute of minds may find themselves puzzled.  All you need to play this app is simple physics, little problem solving ability and some logic.

The object of Rafter is to sketch a shape in the “Sketch Here” box, and use your drawing to touch, hit or whack the little red ball.  Though it may sound easy, the game does it’s job in twisting your brain as the number of obstructions and blocks that foil your plan are many.

What I really liked about the game was that although they aren’t a big name developer, the game still feels polished and very professional.  As for the gameplay, it is relatively entertaining and addicting for those physics lovers.  I like how the entire top of the screen is your sketch box and you have the freedom to pretty much create as big or small of a shape as you would desire.  There’s also the Open Feint feature where you can share scores globally which is a nice touch.

It's fun but it'll be over before you know it..

However, the longevity of the game is where gamers will be sorely disappointed.  The game is only 21 levels long, and it goes back blazingly fast.  How short is it?  Well, let’s just say I’ve never finished a game on my first run through, when reviewing a game, until playing Rafter.  And I usually play the game a few times here and there, but with one run through I was able to knock out all 21 levels in a jiffy.  Not that I’m a brainiac or anything, hey, i didn’t even take physics for crying out loud, it’s just that it goes by so fast.  And there’s no replay value unless you want to get a higher score.

Rafter is the kind of game where it teases you with it’s looks, and solid gameplay, and then just ends the relationship short, leaving you feel cheated and insecure.  Updates are sure to come, well, hopefully they will because the game is altogether pretty fun and I’m sure physics lovers will dig this new app by EMANTRAS Inc.

Red Bull Racing Challenge: Artificial Life’s Newest Racing App Falls Flat

Red Bull Racing Challenge: Artificial Life’s Newest Racing App Falls Flat

Grand Prix Racers are lost on me.  The exhilaration of taking left turn after left turn just never appealed to me, and sadly Red Bull Challenge Racing does nothing to change my opinion.  However, fans of these kind of racers might have something to be excited about in Artificial Life’s newest app.

It gets you behind the wheel of the grand prix-winning RB5 to taste the thrill, the speed, and excitement of the world’s premiere motorsport series.  Join the Red Bull Racing team to take on some of the world’s greatest racing circuits; you can also challenge a friend, compete in multiplayer mode, or race against the clock in the Time Attack mode to rule the online leaderboards.

While pretty there is nothing unique or challenging about the game

Game features include 6 real famous circuits on locations such as China, Great Britain, and Australia.  You can choose from three control schemes using the iDevice’s multi-touch screen and accelerometer.  Facebook and Twitter integration along with global leaderboards make the game have some replay value.  A cool little feature was the in-game pit stop challenge where you test your reaction time trying to get your vehicle in tip-top shape.

It's a shame when the pit stop features are the funner part of the game

Other than the unique, and refreshingly cool in-game pit stop feature, Red Bull Racing Challenge does nothing to “challenge” the other grand-prix racing apps out there.  Yes, you can race your friends via Bluetooth and it has Facebook and Twitter integration, but will that really keep you coming back for more if the gameplay plays just the same as every other racer?  The graphics are average, and the racing itself isn’t enough to set apart from racers in the App Store.  If you’re an avid fan, I’d say check it out but it’s a whopping $2.99 so curb your enthusiasm accordingly.

SPARTACUS Blood and Sand: A story told in blood

SPARTACUS Blood and Sand: A story told in blood

Spartacus founds himself an unwilling gladiator a captive of Rome forced into slavery, and reborn as a Gladiator- but he’s not alone! Spartacus: Blood and Sand lets gamers play out this gory storyline based on the newly released motion comic version of the TV show from Starz Media, LLC.

Spartacus Blood and Sand developed by Artificial Life is one of the better fighting apps to hit the appstore, and while the graphics are not up to same the same level as Gameloft’s Blades of Fury it manages to hold its own or improve in every other category.

The game consists of Quick Fight, Story, Challenge, Practice, and Head to Head modes of gameplay to keep you occupied for quite some time. It also includes Achievements, Local and online leaderboards as well as Facebook and Twitter connectivity. The Head to head multiplayer portion of the game includes WI-FI and Blue Tooth Connectivity. Unfortunately there is no true online matchmaking.

Learn to use the block action otherwise a simialr fate awaits.

The Story Mode in Spartacus Blood and Sand plays out like a movie. Before each match a video clip is played telling you the story up until your current point in time in which you are left to control your destiny.

The fighting plays like your standard mortal combat, or Soul Caliber type game where each character has there own set of unique special attacks. Each match consists of 3 rounds where the winner of two moves on while the loser is left as remains for the dogs to feed upon. You will have to use some strategy and learn your opponents weakness in order to defeat most of them. Once you complete the game you will have unlocked all the characters, and are free to use them in the other modes of gameplay.

After each round your statistics are recorded and your scores can be judged against local, friends, and Global leaderboards as well Facebook and Twitter postings.

Seven characters each with unique moves await your command

After you are tired of the story mode there is the Challenge and Survivor mode to keep you occupied for a bit longer. I have to say the game is put together really well, and while it doesn’t innovate in any way it manages to hold your attention longer than most fighting game do.  The controls are adequate with the virtual d-pad however I found myself cursing at apple for not introducing some kind of Dpad or nub into the iPhone when I play these types of games.

Fans of fighting games should take a look at Spartacus Blood and Sand it’s got great production values, good graphics and gameplay rolled into story where you care about the character. At $4.99 it’s a bit difficult to say this is a MUST have app, but at say $2.99  it’s a great deal and is the right price for the amount of content and features you get.

Dark Nebula: Usher in the Hidden Gem of the Month

Dark Nebula: Usher in the Hidden Gem of the Month

You know, being an iPhone app freak, I constantly check for the newest hottest apps out there, especially the apps that are “Free for a day” because what’s better than trying something for free?  It’s like when you’re at your local supermarket and you get to try a free sample of some sort of new juice or snack product.  There really is no downside.  So there was “Dark Nebula”, just sitting there in the App Store, the game developers just literally giving this game out for free for a day.  I decided to pounce on this lovely opportunity and see what this game is all about…

The game developers describe this game as being “Labyrinth on steroids”.  Just tilt the device to move your “character” throughout the various levels while avoiding traps, opening doors, and turrets, not to mention trying not to bounce, slide or fall right off the track.  The game is simple, tilt to collect these gold capsules as you progress to the end of the level without “dying”.

Dark Nebula’s presentation is spectacular, as the opening seconds of the game really shines of polish and quality.  I was enamored by the smooth, crisp visuals as you slide your character down through perilous heights and narrow paths filled with all sorts of obstacles.  Although the concept is pretty basic, the gameplay is incredibly solid and the sights and sounds of the app are awesome.

There are some games that are for “free” and you absolutely know why they are free, and there are games that are free and you feel like you just shoplifted the App Store.  Dark Nebula falls into the latter category.  The dealbreaker for me in “Labyrinth-style” games is the overall control along with the difficulty progression.  This app delivers in both departments wonderfully, giving the gamer a solid hands-on tutorial and the control couldn’t be better.  A great little detail is that they made your character feel a bit heavier, which helps in maneuvering around the level, unlike in Labyrinth 2 where you feel like the little tiny silver ball weighs less than a pound.

Spot-on controls, perfect difficulty curve, crisp detailed visuals, Facebook integration, global leaderboards, what else could you ask for in a app?  Dark Nebula is just flat out fun and amazingly entertaining for gamers of all ages.  Sometimes there comes a little app that just surprises us all, and ladies and gentlemen, that little app is Dark Nebula.  It is now priced at a buck, but don’t let that deter you.  You can’t get “Labyrinth on steroids” for a dollar anywhere but here.

Parcel Panic: Post-Car Racer 3D – One of the Best Racing Apps to Date

Parcel Panic: Post-Car Racer 3D – One of the Best Racing Apps to Date

Think of Crazy Taxi, but instead of delivering people to destinations, your delivering packages to destinations. It’s a whole island with winding slopes, steep terrain, in various weather conditions – all rendered in high definition, 3D quality visuals.

Your job is to deliver parcels on the island called, Tapiti, but there’s a catch: you only have a limited time in completing your mission. Coming into the game, I sort of had no idea what the game is about and thankfully, upon booting the app up for the first time, it sends you straight to an in-depth, hands-on tutorial to help ease gamers in.

Speed and control both elements you will wan't to master

In the world of Parcel Panic, there’s a lot of things the game developers, Mad Processor, did right. First off, the controls are top-notch and controlling your vehicle is a cinch. The roads get windy, and the paths sometime are pretty difficult, but with a few runs around the level, the controlling of your truck becomes an absolute blast because of the overall control you have over it’s movement. Secondly, the graphics are beautifully rendered in 3D and it really sets the game apart when it comes to racing games. While it doesn’t have the stylish flare of Need for Speed, that wasn’t it’s aim as the game is suppose to be taken a little lighter than a hardcore racing game like Asphalt 5.

The feel of the game fits perfectly with the overall presentation and their target audience. The game isn’t meant to be taken as a hardcore racing game, it’s light-hearted and fun for any kind of gamer. It’s not a game that’s loaded on content but it’s a basic pick-up-and-have-a-blast-playing racing game.

Via road or air it's your choice just get the packages there on time

But that’s a slight downfall, unfortunately in some respects. For one, the game only has you in one single location, Tapiti island, for the whole game. That’s probably going to change with some updates but still the environment, while it is magnificent, still is just one location. It boasts 396 “levels” but it’s just another part of the island. And as I mentioned, the game is a simple pick-up-and-play, there are no achievements, leaderboards, or multiplayer of any sort. So that kind of hurts its overall replay value.

Parcel Panic – Post Car Racer 3D is a racing game for any kind of gamer. It’s a fun, lighthearted, pick-up-and-play app that not only runs beautifully on the handheld device but looks beautiful as well. With some more updates that include more locations, achievements, and or global leaderboards will propel this game to the elite section of racers but it’s still a top-notch racing app. As it’s still priced at $0.99 for it’s weekend sale, I can safely say that it’s one of the best racing apps available.

Blockoban: Finally, a Fun, Free, Puzzler For the New Year

Blockoban: Finally, a Fun, Free, Puzzler For the New Year

Usually, the FREE games listed in the App Store are pretty brutally cheap.  Yes, they are free, but man, would it kill the game developers to present their app a little better than that?  Take Tap Defense, for example.  I mean the game just looks beautiful, has depth, and has updates coming every once in a while just to let the gamers know that they are committed.  Why can’t most apps be like this one?  Most of the time, we find a faulty game that’s barely playable for more than an hour and it’s immediately trashed forever.

One wrong move and the level can't be completed

I was skeptical towards the free puzzle app, Blockoban, seeing my past experiences with free apps has been nothing short of horrendous.  The game devs said the game is basically a premium app that is given to the public for free to try, (an idea that I’m desperately trying to get game devs on board with) and the full game requires a in-game purchase.  What you get, is a in-depth tutorial and a good amount of puzzles (100 in all) to befuddle your mind and your fingers.

It’s a simple block sliding game, in the same influence of games like “Fling!”, but instead you are using blocks.  The object of the game is to take the lone blocks and match them with their corresponding color in order to progress to the next level.  When you slide a block, it moves until it collides with something, and the levels often require strategy and a bit of planning ahead or else you’ll end up begin stuck.

You will have to slide rings into specific positions to move forward

The game sure has a lot of good things going for it.  It’s got Plus+ online integration, colorful albeit basic graphics, enticing music, fun yet simple gameplay, solid controls, and a variety of block types and obstacles to keep you on your toes.  Also, a nice feature is the unlimited undo because, take it from me, you’re going to make your share of boo boos, and you’re going to need that undo button like you needed a bib when you were a baby.

Hey, it’s free, why not give it a try?  Regardless of your gaming tastes, I recommend everyone give this surprisingly fun little app a try. You’ll be getting an addicting puzzle, complete with refreshingly sleek gameplay, simplistic controls, brain teasing puzzles and altogether a quality app for not a single dollar out of your wallet.  Give it a try, you’re only a block away from Blockoban.

Battle Botz: Can it Fight it’s Way Onto Your iDevice?

Battle Botz: Can it Fight it’s Way Onto Your iDevice?

Welcome to the battlefield, Bot Commander!  In this game of intense battle action, you are in control to lead your small army of BattleBotz to victory.  Select the right BattleBotz, choose tactics and weapons wisely do the right moves and attack cleverly.  Only then you will survive against your enemies!

A turn base strategy game, BattleBotz has three different game modes: Endless Battlefield where you have the chance to stand against waves and waves of enemies to see how long you last.  There’s Player vs. Player which is a fast mode that sets up a game against a human enemy of yours.  And last but not least, Custom game, where you can configure ll the game options on your own, including the amount of teams, the amount of both, the map etc.

The Bot is your controllable unit of destruction and each bot starts with a predefined movement gear, meaning you can only move around a certain amount of spaces.  You have a battery that feeds your movement gear and your weapons so you must choose wisely to make sure that you maneuver strategically through the map while keeping your weapon locked and loaded.

The app boasts sleep graphics on the terrain and the bots themselves don’t look too shabby.  The environments surrounding your army is a little dull, and nothing really to write home about.  There are 8 different upgradable Botz, over 20 weapons systems reaching from the Power Chainsaw to the Nuclear Rocket, 13 unique maps of gameplay, multitouch navigational map. good soundtrack, and online leaderboards.  One thing that I especially like the ranking system replicated from games such as Call of Duty and Halo, which basically keeps your overall rank for all to see and as you gain experience, you level up in promotion.  Pretty sweet, eh?

The major gripe I have was overall the game just doesn’t add anything new to the turn-based strategy genre.  Yes, it has the ranking system that no other game has, and a large array of weapons, as well as great looking visuals, but mixed in all together for some reason I just felt underwhelmed.  The gameplay is just normal, average and it just didn’t stand out to me.  Whether that be because I’m not a huge turn-based strategy game fanatic or not, you as the gamer can choose whether to believe me or not.

In summary, I recommend this game to those action fans that have a special bond with turn-based strategy games like Mecha Wars.  If not, maybe you should wait for a lite version because I’m afraid this game might excite some, and bore the rest.

Battle Blasters: A futuristic battler teetering on the verge of success

Battle Blasters: A futuristic battler teetering on the verge of success

In the year 3042 mankind has grown tired of traditional sporting events so the people invented the Battle Blasters tournament which pits the worlds best fighters against each other where only one can be called the victor.

Battle Blasters contains three different gameplay modes.  Campaign, Quickplay, and Split Screen Mutliplayer as well as four  (one Unlockable) difficulty levels to choose from. The game also incorporates Facebook connectivity.

Battle Blasters campaign mode plays out similar to games like mortal combat, or soul caliber where you pick from one of 6 initial combatant of which only two are unlocked at the start and battle your way through all the competitors vying for the title of worlds greatest fighter.  There really is no background or story to the campaign except for a few short sentences spoken before each battle.

Graphically the games is slightly above average. There is a nice mix of animations and blaster colors giving the game a cartoon battle look. The battles themselves take place in a corridor view meaning top to bottom view with a slight angle looking inward. The game does a good job of walking you through the mechanics of movement and battle which uses all finger movements.

The matches play out over 3 rounds where the winner of two rounds is declared the winner and advances. You need to attack as well as defend yourself while maintaining a charge in your weapons gauge. Each character has different abilities and weapons that must be utilized if you intend on winning all the matches.

The game also does a good job of making you think on the move. You wil be performing offensive, defensive and movement commands almost simultaneously as you progress. I would suggest veteran iDevice gamers begin with a medium level of difficulty as I was able to blow through it in under 30 minutes.

I would assume most players would quite after that and move on to another game which would be a mistake.
As you ramp up the difficulty levels the game really starts to shine as your challenged with balancing both offensive and defensive capabilities with split second timing.

Once you complete the game on each difficulty level you will unlock an additional character which can be used for single or the split screen multiplayer gameplay modes.

My problem with the game is that it feels a bit lacking in content. With only 6 characters to fight your way through the game even on the harder levels can be completed in just a few hours. And the lack of any real online multiplayer components makes the replay value drop as well.

The game’s premise, graphics and controls are done very well and I have nothing to complain about in those departments however just as I was really getting into the game it was over.  Some additional content would have made a better case for the game especially at it’s asking price of $2.99

If your a fan of strategic real time battlers and are willing to fork over $2.99 for a few hours of fun I would highly recommend you take a look at Battle Brawlers.  However if your on the fence I would mark this app down on your to get list while waiting  for an upgrade and a slight price drop to justify the purchase.  The developers have taken  a different path from most fighters and with a few minor tweaks and additional content I honestly feel the game could have some real success.

Paperboy: An addictive and simplistic classic

Paperboy: An addictive and simplistic classic

Anyone who grew up during the 80′s will remember fondly the days spent stuffing quarters into Paperboy when arcades still  existed.  25+ years later the classic arcade version along with a newel enhanced  edition are now available on the iPhone and iTouch.

In paperboy the objective is to keep as many subscribers as possible and to stay alive while earning points for deliveries and vandalizing non-subscribers’ homes and hitting nuisances with newspapers. The iPhone and iTouch versions of the game offer both the classic and newly enhanced 3D versions of the game, 3 different control methods, Trophies, and 4 different localized high score rankings.

Deliver those papers, but watch out for obstacles

The game plays out with you as the paperboy on a bicycle delivering newspapers along a suburban street. The streets are laid out in to 3/4 over the top perspective and your goal  is to deliver a week of daily newspapers to subscribing customers.

At the beginning of each day or level in overview of the street is shown highlighting your active subscribers.  Missing a delivery or damaging the subscriber’s house will cause you to lose those  subscribers, and once all your subscribers are gone the game is over.  Additional subscribers will be added if you can achieve a perfect delivery of all subscribers on the street.

As you deliver the papers you must avoid numerous obstacles and hazards along the way. Additional newspapers can be picked up  as well enabling you to earn extra points  by vandalize non-subscriber’s homes by breaking the windows or forcing a paper into the windpipe of a small child who is harassing you.

Score bonus points for completing the training courses

The end of  each level contains a “training course” which the player tries to traverse within an allotted time for bonus points. In the training course are various targets to be struck with papers, jumps, water and other hazards, etc. Riding over a jump replenishes the paperboy’s stock of papers in addition to earning points.

As with the rest of the level, the difficulty of the training course increases over the week, with new hazards added each day. Crashing on the course or running out of time ends the day, but does not result in the loss of a life. Successful completion of the training course rewards the player with a bonus for any remaining time.

Once each level is complete, the next day or level will begin and the difficulty increases.

Paperboy is one of those games you are going to love regardless of your age.  Those of us who were around during the initial release will love the game for nostalgia alone. Newer gamers will love the addictive and simplicity of the game and while games have evolved well beyond these classics there’s something still viable in these classics that every iPhone or iTouch owner needs to experience.

The Deep: Discover the Glorious Riches of “The Deep”

The Deep: Discover the Glorious Riches of “The Deep”

Deep sea diving games aren’t the rage in the App Store, but 3G Studio just might change that trend with their newest app, “The Deep”. Not to be confused with the pinball game, The Deep Pinball.

The Deep is an old school arcade adventure where you’ll experience the zaniest deep sea diving, treasure hunting action you ever played on your handheld device. Search for lost treasure while avoiding great whites, jellyfish, toxic mutated fish, deadly pirate ghosts, and even Mayan temple gods. Collecting lost objects at the bottom of the ocean floor for locals get you rewards and new quests to take on.

Many a treasure awaits those brave enough to explore the depths of The Deep.

The object of the game is to collect treasure from the depths of the sea, recover lost objects that locals around the island have lost and return it to them, and explore new areas and encounter all kinds of people, places, and things. There are over 40 unique underwater levels filled with all kinds of wacky marine life with big buggy eyes with a crazed smile on their face you’d think they had just had just saw a beautiful woman and they had no idea what to do or say.

The main part of the game is you going down underwater and discovering all sorts of goodies. Using the joystick on your left and action button your right setup, the controls work out pretty well and maneuvering around the fishes, and sharks etc. is a breeze.

Collecting treasure has it's downfalls. Avoid marine life or pay the consequences.

Altogether, with the animation, engaging storyline, colorful characters, the soundtrack, and the deep sea diving gameplay, the game is as entertaining to the eyes as it is to the ears and your fingers will be having a good time as well.

Altogether, the game just is overflowing with polish, and the gameplay is a blast to play for all you adventure nuts out there. Not only that, as the title claims, the game is deep. It has enormous depth, going from 40 different levels, upgrading and purchasing different equipment to better defend yourself in the Deep. The Deep is highly recommended, although it’s a little pricey ($3.99), it’s worth it because of the amount and quality of the content. The water is fine down by the Deep so it’s time we all took a dip.

Zombeat: Guitar Hero meets Resident Evil? It’s Time to Rock!

Zombeat: Guitar Hero meets Resident Evil? It’s Time to Rock!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Zombeat, where Zombies and all sorts of monsters will be strolling down your path to dispose of you.  Because of the sheer number of screenshot1zombies that are on their way to destroy you, to prevent the shellacking of a lifetime, you must work your multiplier up by hitting the notes on the right beat with the corresponding note.  Think “Tap Tap Revenge” and “Guitar Hero” mixed with “Resident Evil” because with each note that you get right, it fires a bullet straight through the zombie’s head.

You may be aware of games that try to mooch off the success of Tap Tap Revenge, games such as iHooy, which had mixed reviews.  But Zombeat is different in the sense that it better blends the action and music aspect of the game so fans of either genre get a taste of both.   Zombeat is not just a beat matching game; it’s a game of survival. Play as Zeke, the biker turned zombie killer, in a fight for your life trying to punch, shoot, and even chainsaw your way through massive zombie attacks. The only way to survive is by beat matching your way through the horde of zombies and crscreenshot2eating a bloody mess along the way.  After all, it was Zeke who woke the dead in the first place, and now it is his job to send them back.

The premise is creative if anything, and the gameplay is overall polished and rock solid.  The main drawback I encountered was it was hard to tell whether you were getting the notes right or if I was way off.  Unfortunately, the notes don’t light up in a certain way when you hit them correctly so sometimes I wasn’t too sure if I was rocking it like Bon Jovi, or about to get the cane.  Altogether, it’s a nice app with good graphics and animations, powerups to blow away those zombies, social leaderboards, downloadable content, and surprisingly fun and catchy tunes to groove to.  Get it now while it’s on sale!

Wobble: Shake what your mother gave ya

Wobble: Shake what your mother gave ya

Lets all be honest here. Regardless of the technology there is always a “dirty” side to technology in fact it’s pretty easy to say that the “underbelly” of society can actually drive a product from the brink of death such as the story of when VHS was in a fight for it’s life with Betamax. Sony refused adult content whereas VHS opened it’s doors to adult content which exploded the sales of VHS and the rest is history.

Today that new frontier is the appstore, and like it or not a hefty percentage of the install base is into adult oriented materials, and since this is America if there is a dollar to be made well than “There is an app for that.”

Enter Wobble! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to explain what you can do with this application allows you to do. I will touch on it, but that I want to take the conversation down a differnt path and explain some family friendly things this application can do.

Wobble allows you to take any image you currently have stored on your iPhone re-size and scale it and add a scalable wobble effect to any selected region of the picture.  You also have the ability to adjust the wobbles effect and duration using the included tools.

Once you have created your masterpiece you can save the file to be played back at a later date. or share it using the hotwobble.com website which is built into the application.  The Application does have a few drawbacks thought. In the current version there is a limitation of 6 Wobbles that can be applied to one image. This isn’t really a concern for most parts but I thought I would mention it in case you have multiple bounces that are needed.

It also would have been nice to included a built in camera so you could capture, create, and share all while in the application instead of having to close the app to take a picture, and re-open the application. Trivial for some but once again im simply pointing out things.

Now besides placing these wobbles on women and starring at your iPhone for hours thinking about what you would do to the picture in a real life situation there are plenty of family friendly things you can do with the application as well. In fact I would use the app for this more than the aforementioned purposes myself.

For example I have a friend lets call him Johnny who always no matter question you ask him has this nervous tick where he shakes his head slightly left and down before answering. So I took his image and added a wobble effect to his face zoomed in, and whenever he’s not around or even around I pull out the app and ask him a question. It beings a laugh to all our friends having Johnny around all the time!

Your ability to be creative is the only limitation to the longevity of of using wobble.  The application  may be built with ogling in mind, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There is plenty of good clean and dirty fun to be had with Wobble.

Wobble comes in a lite .99 version and a full blown premium version. This review was based on the full premium version of the application which has all premium features.

The application costs $1.99 currently which honestly the biggest deterrent to most consumers seeing as the application has a limited scope of function. However the developer is promising some huge additions and features to those who purchase the premium edition as opposed to the lite version.

Dreamland: a diamond in the rough

Anyone who has played or seen the game “PAIN” on the Playstation3 will instantly recognize the similarities between that game and Dreamland. If your not familiar with “PAIN” you should think of this as a variation of pinball meets torture chamber.
