Machine vs. Machine Gun: In 2073, the Real Battle is Between Gamer and Monotony

Machine vs. Machine Gun: In 2073, the Real Battle is Between Gamer and Monotony

So let me tell you what you need to know about, Machine vs. Machine Gun.  The year is 2073, alien robots have declared war o\n the human race.  Ever heard this one before?  To prevent humans from developing a stronger defense, the robots started aScreen shot 2009-12-20 at 7.02.18 PMttacking our weapon development centers.  There’s only one development center left and you are Sgt. Jackson, the only soldier that survived and it’s your job to defend the surviving research lab.

Play as Sgt. Jackson as he defends 8 areas that are most vital for the survival of this research lab.  Can you hold off the invasion before the robots take over?  One man survives the terrible onslaught of the robots; can he survive till the end?  It’s up to you to find out.  Play in 8 different levelsScreen shot 2009-12-20 at 7.02.05 PM in the game, and with each new level there’s different environments, weapons, and enemies you’ll be fighting.

The first impression I got from this game was that it had that cheap, one dollar game feeling.  The graphics are just way too plain in comparison to games that have come out in the App Store as of late.  If the visuals aren’t up to par, then the gameplay has to blow gamers away and this game doesn’t deliver that either.  It’s just way too linear, just shooting one robot after another and the boss fights aren’t anything special or diverse.  Altogether, the concept didn’t seem too bad, albeit a bit unoriginal, but it severely lacks replay value, wow factor, and some sort of additional mode.

Controls:

For Machine vs. Machine Gun, you control a gun turret, complete with a shield generator handy to defend yourself against the invasion of robots.  You must maneuver your turret around and aim it precisely at the targets without a crosshair.  This is pretty difficult.  Allow me to explain.

A lovely option that game developers are making available to us gamers it the ability to fully customize your controls whether it be sensitivity, or calibrating the accelerometer.  Machine vs Machine Gun severely needs this option because the gun moves on a swivel and the controls are inverted, meaning up is down and down is up.  Why they did this I have no clue, because it will cater to some who are used to it, but others will be screaming foul and will be getting lit up by the enemy robots like Christmas lights.

What We Liked:

+ Decent visuals and environments  + Level choice option  + Futuristic feel + Wide range of various enemy robots  + Boss fights at the end of every level  +

What We Disliked:

- Extremely tedious  – Levels feel the same after a while  – Boss fights are uninspiring  – No Pause button  – No Resume game feature  – Tutorial isn’t very informative  – Lack of customizable controls (sensitivity, inverted, etc.)  – No achievements or awards  – No soundtrack  – Lame weapon sound effects

Final Verdict:

Killerstorm Studios brought us to the year 2073, but I have a strong feeling that a lot of people won’t want to take that journey to that year.  If in 2073, alien robots are attacking me and all I have left is a gun turret that has inverted controls, lame weapon sound effects, and the robots I’m fighting don’t even look cool, then I’d rather just stick with my iPod touch in the year 2009.  Daniel says skip this one-dimensional, lackadasical, extremely monotonous app that even for a buck isn’t offering the gamer nearly enough.

iPhone’s BEST Top Down Shooters: Agree or Disagree?

iPhone’s BEST Top Down Shooters: Agree or Disagree?

Many of you who have iPhones and are fans of the old top-down shooters will be eagerly awaiting an iPhone version of the classic Raiden franchise. While we wait, there are a few shooters in the App Store that are on the right path. Which one is thScreen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.05.25 AMe best for your buck? Lets take a look.

First up we have Sky Force & Sky Force Reloaded by Infinite Dreams Inc for $2.49. The length of the campaign is almost double that of other shooters in the App Store and the addition of picking up civilians gives it a little more edge. This game was one of the best mobile shooters in the past however its origins are obvious on the iPhone’s much higher resolution display. The sound effects are closer to that of an Atari 2600, falling short on trying to impress us with arcade-like audio. Gameplay is relatively boring and power-ups are dull.

Next we have iFighter by EpicForce and SkySmash 1918 by Richard Screen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.02.56 AMWilson. Both have short campaigns however the presentation in these titles is outstanding with exceptional 2D graphics and sound effects particularly in SkySmash. iFighter has got more variety in enemy types and boss battles. Both lack in power-ups compared to the over the top selection found in Raiden (probably due to the World War setting.) If Capcoms 1942 is more up your alley you have to try out both of these games. For all their merits the short campaign and no multiplayer make them feel incomplete.

Screen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.03.11 AMFinally there is Gameloft’s Siberian Strike. Though I’m slightly disappointed in the 3D visuals, here is a shooter that finally contains a decent length in its campaign with a well scripted storyline that is actually funny. Combine this with multiplayer over Wi-Fi, decent power-ups, excellent audio and special levels that switch to a 3D third person perspective, Siberian Strike definitely feels complete. Not as nostalgic as iFighter or SkySmash, Siberian Strike is definitely the closest we can get to Raiden until (or if ever) iScreen shot 2009-11-25 at 1.03.25 AMt’s released.

An honorable mention goes to iBomber by Cobra Mobile ($3.99).  This shooter will have you dropping bombs on your enemies relying on precision timing rather than the traditional “shoot everything” Raiden-style game.  Although gamers main complaint was the controls, it’s definitely worth checking out at least the Lite version.  Screenshots look great and reviews are positive. May be worth a look.

A mysterious surprise.  There was no previous word that Capcom was still adapting its Resident Evil franchise for the iPhone. However, Resident Evil 4 was found in the Japanese App Store for a short period of time before disappearing.

Anomaly Review

Anomaly Review

Space shooter games are very popular in the App Store, and Anomaly looks to capitalize on this success.  Don’t judge a book by its cover – despite its lack of polish, Anomaly is a fun mission-based retro shooter.

Galactic Gunner Review

Galactic Gunner Review

Tap-to-shoot games are in large quantity in the App Store, but most of them suffer from a general blandness and simple gameplay.  Galactic Gunner suffers from neither of those problems.  Cinematic animations and challenging gameplay make Galactic Gunner a true blast to play.

HotField

HotField

Growing up I must have played a thousand different side or top scrolling games in my time, so being a veteran
of these games and having to do reviews for them now puts me in hard place. You see I’ve seen every possible
situation imaginable. So what can Hotfiled do to make its mark on the genre?

Black Shades

Shoot down all potential threats with a variety of weapons in an attempt to save the VIP from death in Black Shades.

Sky Force Reloaded

Sky Force Reloaded

Loading up Sky Force, I really had no idea what to expect. Okay, to be fair I had a pretty good guess the game would be a vertical shooter, the genre is exploding on the iPhone right now and the name does rather scream “Hey, let’s go fly around and shoot things!!” But beyond that, I really did load up the game blind.

Vector Tanks Review

Those of you familiar with the 80′s Atari game Battlezone should take a look at Vector Tanks.

Blue Attack

Blue Attack

I should start by saying that I am a big fan of Blue Defense.  I love the look and control aspects of the game, and, most of all, for some reason I loved that instead of a health bar you were given the population of your planet and you sadly had to watch it as it counted down to the extinction of your planet.

It made me want to get revenge for each death those Red Bastards had caused.  And now, finally I have my chance.

Space Ninja Review

Space Ninja Review

Space Ninja isn’t your average 2d space shooter. In fact take everything you know about the genre and toss it in the trash this game breaks all those traditional rules, and I highly recommended Yose Widjaj to seek immediate entrance into the witness protection program.
